A Ranch Home Sunroom Addition With Expansive Glass Windows

A Modern Sunroom Addition in Waunakee, Wisconsin

Waunakee Wisconsin Sunroom Addition

One of the things we love about our area is the full range of home styles and the challenges they bring in terms of our design capabilities. We recently completed a Waunakee home remodeling project that included a sunroom addition with an expansive bank of glass windows that take advantage of the stunning views surrounding the home.

The home started as a mid-1970s bi-level house with several design touches that made it lean towards a contemporary style. It had a screened in porch and a carport, which while appropriate for a California home, was becoming a bit of a hindrance for our clients as they age. On the contemporary side, some wing walls were sticking out of the front of the cantilevered raised ranch house, which while stylish and trendy in the 70s had fallen out of style.

While the house had received little maintenance in many years, the homeowners decided to do a complete remodeling which included the addition of a sunroom.

Bringing the Outdoors In

The homeowners wanted to take advantage of the beautiful backyard view which faces to the South. Because the contemporary design incorporated larger than average overhangs, we designed the sunroom to take advantage of the existing structure. To create the space, we continued the modern design by building a cantilevered shed roof. By cantilevering the roof rafters, we were able to provide shade for the large patio doors and windows during the summer, but also allow more natural light into the space in the winter months.

The interior of the sunroom is designed to take advantage of the fantastic view out to an adjacent Wetland area. We installed a 16-foot wide Andersen patio door with transom windows above to bring in natural light, and yet is protected from excessive heat thanks to the oversized cantilever overhang of the upward sloping roof. A window at the end of the room adds to the view and lets in even more natural light as the sun makes its way to the west.

A Sunroom Addition That Creates an Indoor/Outdoor Living Space

The 16-foot patio door opens to a modest deck. The original design had a narrow deck/walkway that stretched across the entire back of the house, breaking up the two-story rear exposed elevation with a beautiful horizontal line. The line was emphasized using color on the fascia board. We opened up the views from both the sunroom addition and the deck by using a stainless steel cable railing and Fortress brand posts and handrail.

The sunroom addition adds a spectacular, usable space that takes advantage of the existing environment and brings the beauty of the outdoors into the home in a unique way. In fact, there's nothing typical about this home, and nothing ordinary about our design approach and the solutions we incorporated. While this is not a project that's intended to appeal to everybody, it does have a spectacular WOW factor. The final result of the overall project is a one-of-a-kind home that has gone from dated to timeless. We updated the exterior of the house to bring it from the 70s to create a timeless design that takes full advantage of its location, views, and unique charm!
