A Walkout Basement Remodel Designed For Living

This Sixmile Creek Finished Basement Has Rooms For A Variety Of Activities

When a basement is shared by numerous family members it needs to serve multiple purposes. These repeat clients asked us to create a finished basement with a bit of everything. A large flat screen television, an air hockey table, a wet bar, a 36" gas fireplace,  a spare bedroom, and a bathroom.

The fireplace doesn't always need to be against the wall or at a 45-degree angle. The fireplace was angled slightly in a way that addresses the main space of the room while solving the constraints of the adjacent patio door. A carefully planned tile pattern surrounds the curved fireplace face and wraps around the right side to the main wall.

Several key design and construction features make this lower level special.

  • The window in the bar area was doubled in size, to feel like a main level instead of a basement.
  • The stairway was opened, and rebuilt from an L-shape to a straight run. This allows a better use of space, saving 10 square feet occupied by the landing. It opens the view between the lower level rooms, bringing light deep into the windowless game room.
  • The stairway now brings guests right into the main living space instead of dumping them into a dark back room.
  • A column was eliminated by installing a stronger beam to support the first floor above. This opens the main space up into a large room, puts the TV where it can be viewed from the bar, living area, and game room. It lets furniture be placed in the ideal spot for enjoying a movie or football game!
  • The bathroom has an artistic vessel sink and a luxurious rain head shower. The economical prefabricated shower unit is concealed by an economical semi-frameless shower door. Saving money on the shower unit and door allowed the clients to splurge on the shower head and vanity, which was used primarily by their high school daughter.
I had high expectations coming into the project and hired Degnan Design-Build-Remodel because of their reputation for excellence. Our experience was very favorable because of the communication before, during and after the project. My expectations were met by Degnan Design-Build-Remodel whereas I believe they would have fallen short had we gone with another contractor.
