We recently completed a new second-story home addition for our clients, John and Amy, a professional couple with young children. Their Sun Prairie home had three bedrooms on the second floor. The couple's master was outdated and impractical. With 3 kids and two bedrooms, 2 needed to share one of the other bedrooms, and the second-floor bathroom was shared by all three kids. They came to us seeking a solution. After consultation with Brian, they engaged us to help them with a design solution to add the space they needed.

Building A Second-Story Home Addition For More Space

Amy and John had already determined that a second-story master suite addition over the garage was the best way to gain the space they needed for an updated master and a home office for John. The large footprint of the garage offered ample space for a new master suite and a home office on the second floor. The challenge was seamlessly integrating the addition onto their existing home.

Designing the Perfect SolutionFor A Growing Family

Amy and John began working with our team on the design process. After a few different design options and layouts, John and Amy landed on the perfect addition. They chose to place a compact home office next to the master bedroom. A decorative cabinet filled with family photos and keepsakes greets you as you enter the bedroom suite or exit the home office nook.

New Woodwork and Doors On The First Floor

On the main level of the home, all of the woodwork and interior doors were replaced with a tall 5-inch Colonial baseboard and a wide, 3-inch window casing to create a substantial elegance. Wainscot was installed in the dining room giving it a sense of grandeur and formality. The second story of the home, both the original and the new addition, retained the simplicity of inexpensive drywall-return window jambs.

An Updated Master Suite With Walk-In Closet

Along with the compact office, the new second-floor home addition includes a bright new master suite featuring a large, bright bedroom space, an open concept his and hers master closet with a pocket door, and a double vanity master bath with a luxurious walk-in shower.

The final result of this ambitious project is a home that perfectly fits Amy and John's family and lifestyle. John has the perfect private office space, and each of the kids has their own bedroom, giving them their own space to grow as they get older. It’s been fun watching it come together. The shower did turn out great and so did the whole bathroom.
