Our clients, Eric and Michelle, are a young couple with elementary-aged children who own a lovely home in the neighborhood of Wolf Hollow in Windsor, Wis. The deck off the rear of their house, just off the dining room, has a southern exposure that overlooks a beautiful wetland. A stairway leads from the deck to a patio and backyard a half-story below. Unfortunately, the south-facing exposure caused the deck to become scorching hot throughout most of the day. On bright sunny days, draperies over the sliding doors had to remain closed to prevent solar heat gain. To make matters worse, the decking and railings were in poor condition and required maintenance.

We were asked to provide a solution for a deck that was often unusable and a view that was frequently blocked.

A Solution To The Problem Of Southern Exposure

A pergola for shade, refurbished decking, and a new cable railing became the answers to these problems. We began by removing the worn railings and sanding the deck. The clients chose the green and budget-friendly option of sanding the boards to like-new condition in place of expensive deck replacement. Once the decking was refurbished, we built the pergola and installed the cable railing. Cable railing systems require less maintenance. They have fewer components that need staining in the future and provide excellent visibility to the backyard and wetland views beyond. The new pergola creates much-needed shade for the deck and patio doors, making this outdoor living space comfortable while helping to keep indoor temperatures lower and save energy.

A Comfortable Deck With Shade And A View

The result is a comfortable and attractive backyard feature. The pergola provides the needed shade but also helps the area to feel more like a cozy enclosed room at a fraction of the price of a room addition. Eric and Michelle's family can finally relax in the shade while enjoying the views and the breeze.
