Our clients, Mark and Debbie, had their home custom-built in Wexford Village in 1990. The home worked well for them for over 30 years. However, after 35 years, they were finally ready to make some much-needed updates. They came to us with a large project. They wanted to remodel the entire interior of their home, fixing functional problems and bringing the design, functionality, and style into the 21st century. They were looking for a company that would design, estimate, problem-solve, and care about the tiniest details.  After a long and detailed pre-design process, they decided we were the right fit. As part of the interior redesign, they wanted a complete kitchen remodel. The existing kitchen was poorly laid out, dark, and cramped. The couple wanted to open the kitchen to the main living area to create a true open concept.

Structural Changes Resulted In Open Concept Space

We started our redesign with the area where most of the major renovations would take place: the heart of the home, the kitchen and the main living area. There was a large wall splitting the area straight down the middle between the living and dining rooms, and the disconnected, cramped kitchen and dinette area. Our design started by removing the wall, opening the main level to let natural light flood the space, including the now-open kitchen. However, during demolition, we unexpectedly discovered that the wall was load-bearing. We solved the problem by installing a 22” beam across the open area, flush with the ceiling to carry the load and eliminate an ugly drop beam between the rooms.

A New, Larger Kitchen

Mark and Debbie’s goal was always to open the space and enlarge the kitchen. After several designs were discussed, the couple landed on their desired plan: spreading out the kitchen. We moved the range further along the wall. This gave us the space to create a custom 9-foot stained Maple island with a Linnstone quartz countertop. The island is a visual focal point, serving as a gathering area, and adds plenty of additional seating while replacing the dinette area.

Functional Scandinavian-Inspired Design

Next to the range, we designed a cozy window seat around the existing window, which serves as another gathering spot for guests, and some additional storage. Opening the space allowed us to create a Scandinavian-inspired dining area. With sliding-door access to the outdoor space and windows on the side, the dining area is warm, bright, and inviting. The Lark Kenna LED Chandelier in lacquered brass emphasizes the sparse modern design.

Addressing the Couple’s Storage Concerns

One of Mark and Debbie’s big concerns during the design process was having enough upper-cabinet storage, since the current design eliminated much of it. Our solution not only addressed their concern but also aligned with the overall goal of the kitchen design (reducing visual clutter and consolidating storage). To adjust, we increased the height of the remaining upper cabinets to the ceiling, adding up to four shelves in each upper cabinet.

Maximum Kitchen Organization

Along with extending the uppers to the ceiling and adding shelves to the cabinets to maximize organization and storage, we installed multiple specialty cabinet accessories. The couple wanted a clean, open, modern kitchen. We added a stand mixer lift cabinet, spice and utensil pullout cabinets, pots-and-pans lid custom storage, and a tray divider cabinet to create a completely custom-designed, optimized kitchen with all the storage Mark and Debbie could ever want!

The Result of this Open Concept Kitchen

The transformation from the formerly dark, cramped, and closed-off kitchen into the open, bright, airy, Scandinavian-inspired gathering place was stunning. With the extensive redesign, renovation, and reimagining of their home, Mark and Debbie are absolutely in love with their updated, stylish home.
