A recently retired couple, Mark and Debbie, came to us with a whole-house remodeling project. The original owners of the home, the couple had it custom-designed and built in 1990. Their home served them well for over 30 years. They raised their kids, retired, and now welcome their grandchildren. However, as they settled into retirement, they were looking to update and upgrade their home, making some functional design changes to the layout and style. A big part of the remodel was redesigning and updating their home’s guest and primary bathrooms.

A Scandinavian-Inspired Guest Bathroom Remodel

We started in the Guest Bathroom. Like the rest of the home, the guest bath was dark and cramped. When the home was built, the original vanity was actually too long, leaving too little space for the toilet, yet it somehow passed building inspection. Our redesign changed the vanity to a freestanding style, making it narrower while adding drawer storage where the existing vanity had none. This gave us more room for the toilet and brought the bathroom up to current code. Next, we flipped the bathtub plumbing to keep it on the same wall as the other fixtures, making entry to the bathtub through the glass partition easier. We capped the vanity with a Cambria Quartz countertop and a stylish white Kohler Veil semi-recessed vessel sink. The addition of the Delta Trinsic wall-mounted faucet in Champagne Bronze fit perfectly into the couple’s Scandinavian design style.

A Primary Bathroom Perfect for Aging-in-Place

One of Mark and Debbie’s goals was to update the primary bathroom to accommodate them staying in their home and aging in place. As a result, we centered our design around their request. Like the guest bathroom, the primary bathroom needed a complete overhaul. Once again, the vanity was too wide and didn’t leave enough space for the toilet. Since the vanity needed to be reduced to meet current code, we also decided to make the shower wider, gaining enough extra space to turn it from good enough into great! While we had to narrow the vanity, the homeowners still wanted a double sink. To meet their needs, we had to get a bit creative. Our solution took the form of U-shaped drawers, which allowed the entire vanity to feature drawer storage. This allowed the drawers to wrap around the plumbing within the cabinet.  To meet the couple’s aging-in-place goals, we installed the Daltile Bee Hive Medley in Ash Gray with a matte finish. This tile provides a stone look and the best grip when wet. We also installed a comfort height elongated toilet, a low-threshold shower base, and strategically placed grab bars.

Our Clients Love The New Bathrooms

With aging-in-place features and a Scandinavian-inspired design, Mark and Debbie love the final product. Open, airy, bright, and functional, our redesigned reimagination of their home will serve them for years as they age in place and welcome family and friends!
