We recently completed a whole-house remodel of a classic 100-year-old Craftsman-style Bungalow in downtown DeForest, Wisconsin for our clients John and Amy. They're professionals with a love of dogs and classic old homes. This stunning bungalow was the perfect choice to meet their needs for location, lifestyle, and timeless elegance. They came to us with a well-defined vision, including a first-floor master bedroom suite, an updated kitchen, and first-floor bathroom, an attached garage addition, and a deck on the back of the house. Our design team worked closely with John and Amy to develop creative solutions to meet their clearly defined goals and objective.

New Siding, Insulation, Windows, Boiler, And High-Velocity Air Conditioning, Brought This Home Up To Modern Standards.

Designing A Functional Floor Plan

John and Amy wanted a new main-level master suite, plus an enlarged family room, a larger open concept kitchen, and an attached garage. It required a bit of creativity on the part of our design team. As part of this home remodel, our design team also straightened up the rear entry floor plan and updated the main-level powder room, keeping guests separate from the master bathroom.

We started by reclaiming wasted space in the home. For example, at the front door, there was a small foyer that was unnecessary. Moving the front door to the other side of the house provided a more direct entrance. It also added the space we needed for the new master suite.

At the rear of the house, there was an enclosed back porch and a maze of doors at the top of the basement stairway. We simplified the design by creating a more direct entry from the garage addition into the mudroom and then through to the kitchen. We weatherized the back porch to provide a proper exit to the new deck and easier backyard access, with direct access to both the kitchen and basement, with fewer doorways.

An Open Concept Kitchen Designed For Modern Living

Formerly dark and cluttered with inadequate countertops and too many doors., we updated the kitchen for modern living by improving the flow and functionality.

First, we opened the space by creating a pass-through to the dining room. After opening the pass-through and preserving the original wood floors and molding, we replaced the old dated cabinets with all new Northern Classics Cabinetry in Maple with the Taylor door style. For visual contrast, the upper cabinets are stained in Alloy and combined with the darker Nautical stained base cabinetry. We used mixed metal hardware from Miseno - matte black for the uppers combined with champagne bronze on the lowers.

John and Amy wanted functionality and aesthetics in the kitchen. We chose Silestone Pietra countertops in a matte finish. To complete the aesthetic design, we installed gray 6x6 Kaleidoscope mosaic tile with Delorean Gray grout.

The all-new appliance suite features an LG French door refrigerator, Gas Range, and Dishwasher. We also included a Zephyr range hood and finished the appliances with a Sharp Microwave Drawer.

A New First Floor Master Suite With Walk-In Shower

The new master suite sits on the right side of the house. We reclaimed additional space from the original entry foyer after moving the main entry. The new bedroom suite boasts a walk-through closet leading to a full master bathroom. We created a striking tiled shower featuring Sunset Falls 1x3 gray tile in a herringbone pattern and Sunset Falls 12x24 gray tile laid vertically on the shower walls. Both feature Delorean Gray grout subtly tying the design in with the kitchen backsplash. The master also features accessories by Moen.

To continue tying the design together, we installed Northern Classics cabinetry in Nautical with a white solid surface countertop by Carstin in a matte finish.

A Whole House Home Remodel: Updating The Exterior

As part of their home remodel, John and Amy wanted us to update the exterior and make the home more energy-efficient. They requested an attached garage addition and a new deck in the rear of the house.

To accomplish this goal, we replaced the inefficient old windows with Andersen 400 series double-hung windows and a new Andersen 200 series patio door. For the rear deck, we used Dekorators Vista Ironwood Decking with a Keylink Aluminum Railing. The new attached garage features a Clopay Geller door with a Short Bead Panel and one row of windows, decorative spade handles, and strap hinges. We completed the exterior update with PlyGem 5-inch Perfection Shingle Siding in Wicker, PlyGem Double 4-inch lap siding in Newport, and PlyGem Classic Cream exterior trim color.

This home is an excellent example of how an investment in home remodel in an older community can yield comfortable and efficient results. Living every bit as well as a new home, with a character and beauty that can only be achieved through an authentic remodel!
