Dan and Nancy are a retired couple living in East Madison. They came to us wanting to remodel their 1970s home. They had first contacted a local company looking for a new kitchen and bath design. Still, they were unhappy with the drawings and came to us to create the functional home they sought. Along with the new kitchen, the project included two renovated bathrooms to accommodate the couple’s desire to stay home as they age.

Moving the Washer and Dryer

The main bathroom was a decent size. One of Dan and Nancy’s goals was to move the washer and dryer upstairs from the basement, and the main bathroom was the perfect space. Our design switched the locations of the toilet and sink, and by removing the tub, we had enough space to add an additional closet to hold a full-size stackable washer and dryer.

A Custom Walk-in Shower

After moving the toilet and sink and building the laundry closet, the remaining portion of the wall gave us the space for a custom-sized and shaped shower with added aging-in-place features like a low threshold entry and grab bars. The new shower maximized the value of the tub-to-shower conversion for our clients. The custom glass shower door is the perfect finishing touch!

The Master Bathroom

The original master bathroom featured a non-functional and awkward layout. The small shower was tucked around the corner from the entry rather than being a focal point for the bathroom design. The remainder of the space was filled with a tiny vanity and the toilet, leaving everything on one side of the room. We moved the shower to the back wall, making it the first thing you see when you enter the room and creating a visual focal point. This provided the space to widen the vanity slightly and use the original shower location for the vanity and the new toilet.

Widening the Doors in Our Renovated Bathrooms for Aging-in-Place

Both existing bathrooms had 24” wide doors. Because the couple planned on staying in their home as they age, we needed to widen the doors to accommodate any future needs for a walker or wheelchair. To upgrade the size of the door, we installed 36” wide pocket doors in both the main and master bathrooms. Our design not only eased the entrance to the bathrooms but also added an aesthetically pleasing feature to the renovated bathrooms.

The Bath Renovations Improved The Functionality of the Home

The couple's newly renovated bathrooms added functionality by providing Dan and Nancy with the features and amenities they’ll need to stay safe and comfortable as they age. Our renovated bathrooms add an aesthetic feature to their bright, modern, and well-functioning home!

We love our newly remodeled home done by Degnan Build-Design-Remodel. All the Degnan staff were wonderful to work with. Our project manager Jon was exceptional. We took down 5-walls to open up our house with putting in a 30-foot support beam in the ceiling. We updated our kitchen and bathrooms to age in place. All of the Subcontractors did a marvelous job with their expertise work. We knew we chose the right contractor to work with. We couldn’t be happier with our remodeled house.
