A Basement Remodel for a Northlake Neighborhood Colonial

Our clients Tony and Cami loved their 2001 Middleton, WI colonial, but the basement was unfinished. They contacted us after seeing our job sign when we were working in their neighborhood. As a host family for foreign exchange students and the parents of teenagers, they wanted to create more usable space in their home, and a basement remodel was in order. They wanted to make a rec room for the kids to hang out with friends and family. They also needed a bedroom for their college-age daughter. The basement remodel would function for family gatherings and as an apartment-like space with a study, bathroom, and full kitchen!

Starting with a Relatively Blank Canvas

The existing unfinished basement space was predominantly used for storage. Some half-hearted attempts to create usable living space consisted of some installed sheet vinyl flooring and carpet remnants in what would become the rec room. A tiny existing window was located in the space that would become the bedroom. The space behind the open staircase was a perfect location for the bathroom. By understanding how Tony, Cami, and the kids were already using the basement, we created a floor plan designed specifically for them.

A Multi-Functional Hangout

The family room design features built-ins, a large flatscreen for family movie nights, and an electric fireplace to create the perfect ambiance and winter comfort. The built-in Amish handcrafted bookshelves offer plenty of space for movies, books, and décor. The opening at the end of the rec room provides an excellent flowing open concept anchored by a full kitchen with storage, a dishwasher, island seating, and full-size appliances.

A Bedroom, Study, Bathroom and Full Kitchen

Whether it's a family movie night or a visit from their college-age daughter, this basement remodel has given Tony, Cami, and their family the space they need. With a full bathroom and kitchen featuring full-size appliances and island seating, the basement is now the perfect space for hanging out and making cookies or watching the game. The clients even got the perfect reading nook under the stairs they always dreamed of!
