Gen Xers Dan and Kristia are business owners living in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, with their teenage children. Having heard about us through their Facebook group of friends, they engaged us to redesign and remodel their kitchen, mudroom, and sunroom. The house was built around 15 years ago, during the building boom. It was a time that anyone could build and sell a house, and as a result, the design and quality were not up to today's standards. However, the location was great, the yard was perfect, and it was worth investing in the home to make it into exactly what they wanted.

Kitchen Remodel and Design Challenges

Even though the house was only 15 years old, the cabinetry was already showing signs of age. The original kitchen was dark and heavy. A huge valence covered the upper portion of the kitchen window. The dark paint, cherry cabinets, and dark countertops were outdated. The existing kitchen was u-shaped and had wall cabinetry blocking off a connection to the sunroom. The sunroom, which overlooked the backyard and pool, was only connected by a narrow door. It was isolated and had become an unused storage area. Connecting it to the home was a key opportunity!

Improving Functionality

Dan and Kristia requested a dual-fuel range and a proper range hood, a space for the microwave, a walk-in pantry, a prep space, and a cheerful vibe. We met with Dan and Kristia to evaluate several floor plans. Our final design included an L-shaped kitchen with the refrigerator bookending one corner and a new double patio door to the porch. A work island in the center is the primary workspace in the kitchen, providing an easy connection between the range, sink, refrigerator, and open island space.

Improving Flow and Adding Light

The new patio door matches the existing doors leading to the deck and three-season sunroom. When closed, these doors let in plenty of natural light and offer a great view! And depending on how the space is being used, depending on the indoor and outdoor temperatures, they can open the double doors wide or use one to connect the spaces. To create the real walk-in pantry, our clients requested we eliminate the desk area and use the space to create a spacious, well-organized pantry. Click here to view the sunroom remodel.

A New Mudroom and Laundry

Aside from the kitchen remodel, Dan and Kristia also wanted to address the laundry room and mudroom. The home was built with a hallway and a closet, divided by a door to the laundry. The cramped, messy everyday entrance from the garage was a hodgepodge of doors. There were no storage areas for everyday items, and the laundry layout was terrible. The solution? We removed the dividing wall and made the mudroom and laundry one larger space. Cubbies at one end are perfect for storing jackets, shoes, and hats. The laundry features plenty of storage with floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. There’s extra hanging space, a spot for hampers, and other upper cabinets as well! A Perfect Kitchen and Laundry Room For This Active Family

The kitchen is open and bright, and the sunroom is actually used as an inviting kitchen expansion, providing a great view and connection to the outdoor space. The everyday experience of entering through the garage is now organized and delightful. There's a space for everything, including an organized walk-in pantry. This project transformed the life of the home and its functionality!
