A Family Room and Mudroom Design and Remodel

At several local business networking events, we met Eric and Heisley, a professional millennial couple. They originally came to us for two interrelated projects that expanded as we began the design process. First, they wanted a set of functional and aesthetic improvements to the existing decrepit wood-burning fireplace in the family room. They wanted us to seal the inefficient, leaking chimney chase and replace the fireplace with an energy-efficient, sealed combustion gas fireplace to create a charming hearth room. Second, they wanted to improve the existing laundry room and tiny entryway from the garage to create a functional mudroom.

Creating a Warm and Inviting Space to Relax and Unwind

When we met with Eric and Heisley to discuss their project, they expressed their desire to make the family room a functional and charming hearth room. The goal was to match the warmth of the wood trim and cabinetry in other parts of their home. We chose stained cherry Amish cabinetry handcrafted in Wisconsin instead of painted cabinetry. The couple also wanted the design to incorporate bookshelves, a mantle, and a tile fireplace surround. Our design not only accents the fireplace but also creates warmth for the entire room. At the opposite end of the hearth room, we included a beautiful and functional cabinet next to the patio door. One side houses shelving and hooks for grilling utensils. The other side has cubbies sized for baskets that hold toys, food, and other necessities for their adorable four-legged family member!

Adding an Award-Winning Functional Mudroom Design

The second goal of the homeowners was to improve the laundry room and expand the minuscule entry from the garage. At the back entrance of the home, a quarter of the space consisted of a small hallway. The existing hallway was too small to add a mudroom. It was wasted space in the home. The original laundry room had a small closet with a bi-fold door that obstructed it. Our solution was to open the laundry room to the hallway and make it something beautiful. We removed the pocket door, bifold door, and two closet walls to open the space. Next, we installed beautiful custom cabinetry. In place of the closet sits a beautiful bench with shoe cubbies, coat hanging space, and cabinet doors for storing gloves, hats, and seasonal items. As a result of our mudroom design, the laundry room is now bright and cheerful, with plenty of functional cabinetry, drawers, rollouts, and doors.
