Millennial professionals Eric and Katy and their young family found their dream home out in the country. Located in a rural valley between Mt Horeb and Verona, Wisconsin, their home features a fantastic location, plenty of space, and a beautifully wooded yard the entire family loves!

They came to us via a Facebook referral and asked us for a design proposal to remodel their new home. Their goal was to turn this 1990s 2-story, relaxed transitional style home into their dream home. When we first met, they asked us to provide two options – a modest and a more extensive proposal for remodeling their kitchen.

Upgrading and Modernizing the Kitchen

Initially, we were unsure of their budget. We began the kitchen design planning by focusing on budget-friendly options that included painting and reusing the kitchen cabinets. Thanks to a favorable housing market, their previous home sold quickly, allowing them to increase the kitchen design budget and accomplish all of their remodeling dreams!

One problem we needed to address with the size of the refrigerator. With the addition of an island in the middle of the room, the refrigerator stuck farther than the original 1990s model would have. Because we were also remodeling the laundry room, we carefully recessed the refrigerator into the wall between the laundry room and kitchen, allowing the proper walking room around the kitchen island.

Creating a Functional and Stylish Kitchen Design

With the increased budget, we were able to undertake a more extensive kitchen remodeling, including all new cabinetry. For the perimeter, we chose Aspect Cabinetry in Bayou colored poplar. The island cabinetry was also Aspect Cabinetry in white, adding visual contrast to the kitchen design. We added Sunrise Custom Cabinetry open shelving in Maple around the Zephyr Venezia vent hood to give the space a more open feel.

To improve the kitchen's functionality, Eric and Katy chose a set of updated and upgraded appliances. These included a Samsung 30-inch Smart Gas Cooktop, two Kitchen Aid wall ovens with Even-Heat True Convection, a Marvel stainless steel refrigerator, and a Bosch ADA 18-inch 300 series dishwasher with a recessed handle. We mounted the Sharp 24-inch microwave into the island to keep the countertops uncluttered.

We chose a mixed metal design for the cabinet hardware. The upper-level cabinetry features satin nickel, and we used oil-rubbed bronze on all the lower-level cabinets. The Delta Essa Touch-Activated Faucet was done in Arctic Stainless to match the appliances. To add a visual focal point, we created the backsplash behind the stove using matte gray 3 x 12-inch tiles laid out in a traditional herringbone pattern. It's a perfect visual element against the white 3 x 12 -inch staggered backsplash in the rest of the space.

Creating a Kitchen to Meet Today's Lifestyle

The result? Working with Eric and Katy, we created a modern, updated kitchen that meets the needs of their family and exceeds their expectations. Katy said it best... ”Degnan Design-Build-Remodel has been amazing to work with! They listened to what we wanted, then came up with kitchen design ideas that fit out the space so well that we had not even thought of. It has been a great experience!” Thank you, Katy!

We really appreciated how easy this process was. Every person that stepped in our door was friendly and easy to work with. They listened to every idea and any concern and really made sure things turned out exactly how we wanted them. Thank you all, we will definitely have you back again for future projects.
