We recently completed a kitchen renovation project for our clients Brian and Sarah, parents of middle school kids and active community members. The existing kitchen in their Sunnybrook neighborhood home was open to the rest of the home but still felt closed off. They had been living with the original kitchen for a while, wanting an update to transform it into a space that better fit their lifestyle. From everyday cooking and dinners to holiday baking and family get-togethers, their existing kitchen was a 1990s throwback that didn't meet the family's needs.

The Open Kitchen That Wasn't

The existing kitchen was large, spacious, and open to the rest of the house...in theory. It was flanked on either side by the dining room with a large bay window and the living room with a patio door and large windows. In reality, both ends of the kitchen featured a peninsula covering ¾ of the space, creating a visual barrier when sitting in either of the adjoining rooms. Orange oak cabinets, flooring, and trim made the kitchen look like a dark corner.

Creating A Custom Floor Plan

The homeowners wanted a kitchen renovation to create a more open design that improved the flow among the kitchen, dining, and living areas. Sarah was also an avid baker and wanted a wall oven since the range didn't meet her baking needs.

Starting Fresh With a New Kitchen Design

The homeowner's goal was to create a more open design to improve the flow between the rooms. We created a new design from scratch. We removed the cabinets, and our design left the appliances in the same locations for the most part. There was ample space, but it needed to be better utilized. Our design included a double island design. This opened the space both visually and physically. The microwave is installed in one island. The other island has a lowered, table-height workspace where Sarah can comfortably decorate her baking while having easy access to the range on one side and the wall oven on the other.

Completing the Kitchen Transformation With Color!

Along with a new and improved functional design, the other transformative element of this kitchen renovation was color. Brian, Sarah, and their family are big Disney fans and love color! They wanted to incorporate their love for color into their kitchen. Sarah asked for purple accents to go with her Kitchenaid stand mixer. We brought color into our design with the island accent color, backsplash tile, and countertops. The island cabinets are painted in Sherwin Williams Quixotic Plum creating a beautiful accent. The Linnstone Milford White countertop veining has a slight purple undertone. A beautifully colored mosaic backsplash behind the range adds a visual focal point and an upscale look. With matte black Amerock Renown pulls, a black faucet fixture, and decorative light fixtures, the careful combination of colors and textures results in a bright, inviting kitchen.

The purple KitchenAid mixer provided the perfect inspiration for this colorful kitchen. The shimmering colors in the range backsplash tile pulls all the colors together. Getting the right amount of color to accentuate the white cabinets and tops is the design twist for this stand-out kitchen!
