Our clients purchased their home in the Arboretum because they love the beautiful surroundings of this exclusive Madison neighborhood. They tasked us with undertaking a whole home remodeling that took the surrounding into account when creating our design. They had a vision of a home whose interior and exterior blended perfectly to create a unified living experience that featured the best of both interior design and outdoor living. Their desire was to create the feeling of a modern mountain industrial home, like one would find in the Utah mountains.

They requested that we use natural materials and bring outdoor materials indoors like wood, stone, and metal. The homeowner's further inspiration for the home is their love of plants and everything natural. Plants play a part in nearly every room's design, from the living room to the solatium. The home's windows show off the beauty of the Arboretum in all seasons!

Creating Beautiful Outdoor Living Space

As part of the remodeling, two existing screen porches were turned into 3-season living spaces. Once called the Dining Porch is now a proper indoor/outdoor dining space connected to the kitchen with an Andersen 3-panel Folding Outswing Patio Door. When it's opened, it creates a seamless living space.

The Second Porch Gets A Hot Tub and Sauna

The second porch is referred to as the conversation porch. It sits off the right side of the house and is connected to the front deck and the main living room. This porch boasts cathedral ceilings and its knee walls provide privacy from the street. It's just the right place for the spa and sauna. The views are beautiful, and there's the perfect amount of privacy thanks to this secluded neighborhood's knee walls and trees.

 

Natural Materials Create A Seamlessly Inside/Outside Transition

The homeowners asked us to incorporate as many natural materials as possible into the interior design to closely tie the outdoor and indoor spaces together. Design highlights include the edge-grain walnut butcher block countertops from Southside Workshops of Chicago, cedar ceilings, and soapstone countertops in the guest bath. We replaced the fireplace with a high-efficiency gas unit while keeping the original limestone surround, cedar feature wall, mantle, and bookshelves. The mantle and bookshelf were redesigned and stained with a dark Java to tie in the darker colors of the home. We also created a beautiful custom artwork using a slab of natural Rainforest Quartzite that was special to the homeowners.
