A Middleton Wisconsin Home Gets an Inspired Interior Design

An Updated Interior Design and Dedicated Workout Space in Middleton

Our clients Jeff and Dora are a professional couple with kids in school living in the Misty Valley neighborhood in Middleton, Wisconsin. Our relationship started when they got in touch with us wanting to upgrade several builder-grade features to make their home truly theirs.

Like many projects that involve multiple areas of the home, it continued to expand until there was work happening on all three levels of their home. The project consisted of four feature areas. First was transforming a portion of the unfinished basement into an exercise room. Second, the basement family room needed an upgrade into a chic, comfortable family entertainment space. Third, the main-level builder's model fireplace needed an aesthetic and functional upgrade. Finally, upstairs, the two-story open foyer had a flooring system installed to convert the space into the perfect children's study between the kid's bedrooms.

Start With Inspired Interior Design

The home's main level featured a bland and basic builder-grade fireplace. The best feature of the existing space was a pair of awning windows flanking the existing fireplace. The windows created a perfect space for adding built-ins.

We balanced our interior design by adding built-ins featuring storage on one side of the fireplace and a comfortable bench seat and reading nook on the other. The new maple fireplace surround was stained in Chestnut, giving the room a sense of scale and a relaxed luxury.

The white painted shiplap above introduces an element of texture to the space. The same white is used for the handcrafted Amish cabinetry and the window seat on the other side. To tie the design together, we reintroduced the chestnut-stained maple into the design on the countertop and window seat surfaces.

Our inspired interior design continued in the basement. The downstairs family room was already finished, but it was beige and boring. The room had the perfect wall for a monster TV and was in desperate need of a design upgrade. While the space functioned as an informal family gathering space, Jeff and Dora requested that we add plenty of cabinetry and storage.

To meet their request, we filled the entire length of the fifteen-foot wall with handmade Amish cabinetry crafted in Wisconsin. We anchored the space with a beverage refrigerator and a long countertop.

The floating shelves have LED lighting embedded and anchor the left and right sides of the TV wall. Thanks to our inspired interior design, the family room was transformed into a contemporary, casual space perfectly suited for family entertainment.

Adding A Dedicated Workout Space

One of Jeff and Dora's primary goals was to create a dedicated workout room in a portion of the unfinished basement. Our contemporary design featured the use of raw materials. The floor joists, ductwork, and electrical wiring in the ceiling are all painted black. The concrete walls were left exposed to add to the modern feel. The look is completed with rubber workout flooring.

The room features the perfect placement of each piece of fitness gear which includes an elliptical, treadmill, Bowflex, punching bag, and free weights. Electrical is run down the concrete wall and conduit to serve the machines, and the TV is mounted on the wall in the perfect location to enjoy a show while running on the treadmill or elliptical.

The modern workout room adds another level of functionality to Jeff and Dora's home. It is the perfect space to enjoy a home workout and escape the stress of the day.

Finally, A Study Space for the Kids

The last area on Jeff and Dora's list was the study space for the kids. When their home was first built, the two-story foyer was considered impressive. However, with a boring half wall to divide the balcony, it was just another bland beige space. The family's habits were changing, and with the need to study from home, work from home, and spread out, this was the perfect area to create a flex space for the kids.

Our design gave the home an additional 120 square feet of usable space without expanding. The large chandelier was removed, floor joists were installed, and the electrical and drywall work was completed. The two-story foyer already had the perfect window in place above the front door, so this flexible area is now a study area for the kids or the perfect semi-public area for the family computer.

The Results Of This Finished Basement Remodel

The result is a home that is just what the clients were looking for. It's updated, personalized, bright, and cheerful with plenty of light. The once boring family room was transformed into a contemporary, casual family room, perfect for movie night or watching the big game. The updated living room is modern, and the new fireplace surround is luxurious. The addition of the flex space for the kids and the workout room in the basement adds a new level of functionality.

The interior design includes the perfect amount of contrast, countertop, storage, texture, color, and functionality. When you love your neighborhood, a little bit of creativity and a good design can elevate your home and give you the personalized space you've always dreamed of!
