An Exterior Makeover and Two-Bedroom Over Garage Home Addition

A New Home Addition For A Growing Family

Eric and Amber are homeowners of a transitional-style home in the Quarry Cove neighborhood in Madison. In 2018, we completed a basement finishing project for them including a beautiful fireplace and wet bar. We finished their project just in time for them to spend family time in the basement den watching the Super Bowl. We were thrilled when they contacted us for their next ambitious project – an exterior makeover and a two-bedroom addition over the garage.

More Space For A Growing Family

Eric and Amber's quickly growing family is running out of space. With their two kids occupying the two upstairs bedrooms and another on the way, it would get really crowded! They engaged us to design and build a new addition to meet their need for additional living space and to spruce up their home's curb appeal with a complete exterior makeover.

The first step was to conduct a site visit to determine the most feasible option for adding living space to the home. During our visit, it became apparent that the best option would be to add a home addition over the garage. Since Eric and Amber both work from home, along with an additional bedroom, they also needed some office space.

When touring their property, we noticed that the siding was original but had a small replacement section toothed in on the rear of the house. However, the replacement section did not match the color of the existing siding. This gave their home a cheap look. We would successfully address this issue during our exterior makeover.

Beginning the Design Process

As we began the design process, we slowly discovered how simple this process would be. As a part of the discovery process, we walked through the neighborhood. Looking around, we saw that other neighbors had done similar projects. Because of the basic builder-home design, the home felt was begging for an addition over the garage.

Facing A Home Addition Challenge

Almost every major home remodeling will face some challenges unique to the project. Eric and Amber's home addition was no different. In order to avoid placing a support post in the garage, we needed to find a floor joist option for the addition that could span the entire length of the space.

We began our search for the best solution to this challenge. After some research, we determined that the best solution was a “top chord-bearing floor truss system”. This option solved the two problems encountered; first, it would span the entire length of the addition without needing to install a post in the garage, and it allowed us to have a flush entry from the existing home into the addition!

Upping the Curb Appeal

For the exterior upgrade, Eric and Amber told us they wanted a home that stood out but didn't stick out. We achieved their goal in several ways. Most homes in the neighborhood are very earth-toned in their exterior design. We kept to this by choosing a 4.5-inch Dutch lap-style siding in a neutral desert tan color but brightened it up to help the house stand out.

For the accent color, we chose an accent shake siding in Everest. It is a bright color with cool undertones that effectively complement the warm tones of the Desert Tan field siding. When we previously finished their basement, one of the design features the couple loved was the dry stack stone we used on the bar and around the fireplace. Eric and Amber wanted us to carry this design element to the exterior of their home. To bring this design feature to the exterior, we used a similar stone around the garage door to tie the interior and exterior design together.

This Home Addition Was A Large Improvement

A complete exterior makeover and a spacious second-story addition over the garage make their home more than ready to tackle the next chapter for Eric, Amber, and their growing family! This project provides enough bedrooms and office space to comfortably work from home, perfectly fits their lifestyle, and meets their family's changing needs!
