A New Screened Porch Addition and Outdoor Living Space with Pool and Seating

Creating A Screened Porch Addition in Waunakee, Wisconsin

Jason and Nicole are personal friends, former neighbors, and now repeat clients. Discover how we designed and built their stunning screened porch addition and outdoor living space.

Jason and Nicole were neighbors of Abe Degnan, who moved out of his neighborhood and bought a rural house near Waunakee, Wisconsin. Not long after purchasing their new home, they hired us to refinish their basement, creating egress windows and bedrooms for their growing family.

Later, they contacted us to design a screened porch addition that would connect their home to the backyard and pool, integrating views and access from the house with the pool area.

See how we overcame significant challenges and gave this growing family a beautiful, screened porch addition and connected outdoor living space!

Working Around the Challenges

The existing home had some challenges we needed to plan around. An addition was added in the late 1990s, so connecting the roof lines together needed to be done thoughtfully. There was also a walk-up staircase from the basement to the exterior, creating an awkward connection to the doghouse.

This limited where we could place the new screened porch addition and deck. Because the house is elevated five feet above the backyard, it became important to have a view from a patio door rather than a window to ensure visibility out to the pool.

Some additional challenges included the brick and aluminum siding on the home, both of which we carefully salvaged and reinstalled in the process of cutting holes for the patio doors and attaching the porch. The connected interior family room floor is tiled with radiant heat, so the framing and patio door openings needed to be perfect to avoid cracking any tile or risking a leak in the tubing. Our expert team accomplished this all flawlessly.

Creative Solutions and Superior Craftsmanship

For the placement of the screened porch, we situated the addition slightly to the side and back of the house, extending a small grilling deck over the stairway doghouse. We installed two Hayfield vinyl patio doors. These durable doors are slightly larger, nearly eight feet wide.

One door goes from the house into the screened porch. The second goes out the back to the integrated deck, then down the stairs to the pool. These large doors offer the best view of the pool area and a connection to the house, providing maximum visibility, indoor/outdoor flow, and safety for the family.

To address the roofing challenge, the gabled roof turns perpendicular to the 1990s family room addition. This allowed us to create a cathedral ceiling facing west. This was the most effective way to integrate the old and new roofs together. Additionally, this arrangement also provides a south-facing roof for future solar panel installation.

The space underneath the screened porch addition is tall enough to be used for additional outdoor storage, as well as providing access to the lower-level windows of the workshop area in the basement of the family room.

Quality Products to Last a Lifetime

Jason and Nicole’s goal was to create a safe, connected outdoor living space with a natural indoor/outdoor flow that the entire family could enjoy. The screened porch addition was a natural transitional space between the house and the deck and pool area. To maximize views from the screened porch, we chose the Screeneze screen panel fastening system. This system stretches the screen to create beautiful, wrinkle-free screened openings. If something happens and a panel gets damaged, it’s easy to repair.

For safety, we chose the Keylink aluminum railing system for the staircase and deck railing. These aluminum railings are safe, durable, and can withstand the extreme Wisconsin weather. For the grilling deck, we chose pebble gray Trex decking. It’s the perfect color complement to the home’s siding. The decking material is slightly textured to prevent slipping when climbing the stairs with wet feet.

A Seamless Transition from the Family Room to the Screened Porch Addition

The homeowner’s goal was to create an integrated outdoor living space that smoothly transitions from the family room to the screened porch, to the grilling deck, and ends at the pool area. The home sits on a sloped lot, overlooking Waunakee to the west and farm fields to the north and south.

The couple’s new screened porch is the perfect space for enjoying a cool evening with family and friends and has become a focal point visible from the road. It not only provides a sense of privacy when enjoying the pool, but it’s also the perfect transition between the family room and the grilling deck overlooking the pool area.

This new screened porch addition and integrated outdoor living space ensure that Jason, Nicole, and their family will have fun for years as the kids grow into middle school and high school.
