A Second Floor Master Suite Addition in Harriet Park

This project was over two years in the making. We first met our clients Andy & Cassie after they were referred to us by friends in their church. The contacted us with a request to remodel their home to include a master bedroom suite and add a dining room on the ground floor.

Before

Their home was a 3-bedroom 1-bath house, and their family needed more space, and the homeowners desired a real master suite including a private bath and walk-in closet. It took nearly two-years from our first meeting to begin the design process. During this time we had occasional discussions where they defined their design goals and clearly outlined their needs.

After examining several design options, it was determined that a main-level master suite and dining area was not the best option. Instead, our clients opted for a master suite addition and the bedroom of their dreams!

The Master Suite Addition Design Process

During the design process, we created three options for our clients to consider – a small, medium and large master suite addition connecting to the home on the second floor. Our team carefully considered how to design this new bedroom addition so that it complimented the exterior of the house. We also came up with a plan to integrate the master bedroom with the existing second-floor hallway.

The clients chose the medium master suite addition option. Our work extends part way over the garage, and entirely across the family room that is at the back of the house. We designed a new face to the home to update the style and character from the original 3-window Colonial design that is so common in many local neighborhoods. We accomplished this by using stone and shake siding accent along with new shutters.

By locating the addition where we did in our design, we were able to maximize the budget and integrate with the existing floor plan. The entry to the new suite is directly at the top of the stairs, with a small alcove to create a sense of transition and separation from the family space to the parent's space.

The one challenge we faced was the installation of a large structural steel support beam to support the second story master suite addition. The crew skillfully maneuvered it into place in the garage, and then lifted and blocked it into its proper location.

The Design-Build-Remodel Process

We're always looking for efficiencies that can both make our job easier, save the client money, work functionally and look aesthetically appealing. In this design, we placed the new bathroom back to back with the existing bathroom. This makes the plumbing work a bit easier as we just need to tie into existing lines. Functionally, it also provides some acoustic privacy between what is now the kid's bathroom and the new Master Bedroom as the new bathroom acts as a sound buffer for the space.

One beautiful design feature is the new dressing room which is placed prominently in the front of the home. This placement ended up being the perfect location as it balances the window space as well as the overall floor plan of the new addition. A beautiful double window is appropriately-sized to the new dormer cut into the garage roof. It creates a perfect naturally lit dressing room that is divided into his and her spaces on the left and right.

By placing at the back of the house, we installed a triple window overlooking the backyard with fantastic sunset views. Two awning windows are located on either side of the bed over the nightstands which punctuate the elevation of the home that looks onto a side street, providing warm Northern Light to the bedroom throughout the day.

In the bathroom, our clients requested a walk-in shower with a glass door. This large shower is bright and inviting and provides a spacious feel to the bathroom. The bathrooms dark cabinets and woodwork provide visual contrast with the white vanity top. The floor is done in soothing gray tones which compliment the cabinet wall.

Finally, our clients wanted to add character to their home. By placing a dormer in the dressing room, the front of the house got a pop of personality. Inside, we carefully placed a sliding barn door on the dressing room, and the master bedroom receives even more light without sacrificing privacy.

Our clients love the final result. Everything about the master suite addition was designed to create serenity and provide our clients with a warm and inviting respite, a place for the parents to call their own which is a perfect calm retreat. Mission accomplished!
