When we first met John and Amy, they presented us with a well-thought-out set of six primary goals for their whole house remodeling project. Number two on the must-have list was a first-floor master bedroom. Upon further discussions with the homeowners, this turned into a first-floor master bedroom retreat, complete with an ensuite master bathroom remodel and a laundry closet.

Our design for the main floor ensuite included a bonus of a powder room. The original bathroom was an awkwardly sized and shaped room, which likely did not have indoor plumbing when the home was built. As part of this remodel, we moved home's main entrance. This allowed us to reclaim space from the original entry foyer and incorporate it into our master bathroom remodel and design for the new master suite.

Creating the First-Floor Master Bath Retreat

By incorporating the reclaimed space into the master bedroom remodel, we created a secluded getaway for the homeowners. The new master suite sits on the right side of the house, in place of the former bathroom. The extra space allowed us to add a walkthrough closet and an additional laundry closet with a stacked washer and dryer. This master bathroom remodel also features a separate water closet.

A Large Walk-in Shower

The most striking feature of the new ensuite bathroom is the tiled shower. It features Sunset Falls 12x24 gray tile laid on the vertical for the shower walls. The shower fall features Sunset Falls 1x3 gray tile in a herringbone pattern. Both the walls and floor use Delorean Gray grout to match the kitchen backsplash subtly.

Tying the Design Together With The Rest Of The Home

To continue tying the master bathroom design to the rest of the home, we used the same Northern Classics cabinetry stained the rich Nautical color for the vanity. For the vanity top, we chose a white solid surface by Carstin in a matte finish.

We also carried the mixed metals theme into the bathroom featuring the same Miseno hardware in Champagne Bronze that we used on the base cabinets in the kitchen. The Delta Faucet showerhead, Brizo Shower Arm, and Delta Faucet Valve along with the Moen robe hook, towel bar, and paper holder, all in matte black, add functionality and style.

To keep the design cohesive, we used the same Northern Classics cabinetry in Nautical. It also features a white solid surface top in a matte finish from Carstin with Miseno hardware in matte black. We used a 3x6 Glass Solids tile in charcoal gray with stunning heron blue grout to increase visual appeal. We also introduced wallpaper to make a design statement. The wall behind the vanity is painted March Wind, and the rest of the room features Hex-Ash wallpaper from Wallpaper Direct.

A Bonus Powder Room Resulted From This Master Bathroom Remodel

Creating a new master suite resulted in a much-appreciated benefit. Thanks to the extra space we freed up, we had enough additional room to include a bonus first-floor powder room. This added value to the home by making it a full two-and-a-half bathroom home. This accomplishment is almost unheard of in a house of this age and size! It also gave the bonus of making the master bathroom an exclusive refuge for the homeowners as guests could now use the first-floor powder room.

This home is a fantastic example of how a well-planned and allocated re-investment in an older part of the community can yield comfortable and efficient results. This master bathroom remodel added value, character, and beauty through creative design and quality craftsmanship.
