Our clients, Jason and Nicole, are personal friends, former neighbors, and repeat clients. When they moved out of Abe Degnan’s neighborhood and bought a rural house near Waunakee, they contacted us. We refinished their basement and created egress windows and bedrooms for their growing family. After some time, they planned their Natchez project and gave us a call. They wanted us to design a screened porch addition and deck. Their goal was to connect the deck with the pool area, creating an outdoor living space that the family could enjoy.

Planning Around Some Challenges

The goal was to connect the new screened porch, deck, and pool area to create the outdoor living space. The house featured a walk-up stairway from the basement to the exterior. This creates an awkward connection to the doghouse. This limited our placement of the screen porch and deck. The house is elevated five feet above the backyard. As a result, it was important to have a view from the patio door to ensure visibility out to the pool. We situated the screened porch slightly to the side and back of the home. This allowed us to place the transitional grilling deck over the stairway and doghouse. We installed two wide Hayfield white vinyl patio doors to provide the best view and to connect from the house to the porch and to the pool deck.

Quality Products for a Lifetime of Use

The couple’s goal was to create a safe, connected outdoor living space that the entire family could enjoy for years. To maximize views from the screened porch, we used the Screeneze screen panel fastening system. This system stretches the screen to create beautiful, wrinkle-free screened openings. If a panel gets damaged, it's easy to repair. For the staircase and deck railing, we chose the Keylink aluminum railing system. These aluminum railings are safe, durable, and made to stand up to the Wisconsin weather. The pebble gray Trex decking is the perfect color to complement the home’s siding. The decking is slightly textured to prevent slipping when climbing the stairs with wet feet and will virtually last a lifetime!

Mission Accomplished!

The home sits on a sloped lot, overlooking Waunakee to the west and farm fields to the north and south. The new screened porch offers the family the perfect spot for enjoying a cool evening and has become a focal point visible from the road while still providing a sense of privacy when enjoying the pool.

From the new screened porch with its big, wide screened openings to the deck, perfect for grilling, relaxing, and watching the kids in the pool, Jason and Nicole’s vision was fully realized. Their new outdoor living space ensures that the family will have fun for years as the kids grow into middle school and high school. With another project under their belt, it’s mission accomplished for Jason and Nicole… until next time!

There’s so much to be excited about. Just strolling up from the yard, or driving up the hill coming home, from an aesthetics standpoint is amazing, not to mention the great views from the screen porch itself!
