One of the requests our clients Dan and Jane included as a part of their mid-century modern update of their Oregon, Wisconsin home was to create a main-level master suite, featuring an aging-in-place, spa-like en suite bathroom. Our goal of the bathroom remodeling was to keep within their mid-century design aesthetic while creating a modern and functional, yet private, retreat where the homeowners could comfortably prepare in the morning, or relax after a long day at work.

A Bathroom With Sleek Lines and Modern Colors

In keeping with the mid-century style, we took an approach of using unique natural materials and a combination of traditional and moderns colors for our bathroom design. The floating Auburn Ridge custom cabinetry was painted in a traditional mid-century blue-green color. It was kept sleek and modern with the addition of Berenson Uptown Appeal Fluidic hardware. As a nod to the natural material famously used in mid-century design, the homeowners chose a custom reclaimed cherry wood vanity top made by The Wood Cycle. The sleek modern look of the vanity is completed by brushed nickel American Standard Wall Mounted bathroom sink fixture and Kohler under mount bathroom sink.

The vanity includes tiled sides and backsplash that features a modern take on a natural form using Winnipeg Geometric Pattern tile, and Delorean – Gray grout to tie with the Cast Iron and Modern Gray painted walls.

Functionality And A Completely Modern Aesthetic

The spa-like threshold-free shower not only features a built-in corner seat that's comfortable and functional, but its also modern aesthetic is a visual focal point in the master bathroom. This design starts with the heavy glass-hinged Hellenbrand Glass shower enclosure and continues with the stacked Santino 12X24 Chiaro tile finished with Vivid French Gray grout, which compliments and ties in with the gray walls. The shower insets are finished with the same tiles as the vanity backsplash tying the design together visually.

The ultra-modern aesthetic of the shower is completed with the stunning-looking Grohe fixtures, including the brushed nickel rain shower head and brushed nickel Infinity handheld shower, holder, and arm. The final custom touch in the shower is the inclusion of a low niche, at the perfect elevation for washing and shaving.Click Here To View The Entire Home Remodeling Project

Bathroom Remodeling, It's All In The Details!

This master bathroom remodeling is brought to the next level thanks to some subtle and not so subtle details! For example, the custom vanity and a matching set of drawers with floating wood shelving above give a sense of cohesion to the design and provide plenty of storage for the homeowners. The lighting is provided by the Kichler 23X29-inch LED-backlit mirror, two Reese pendant lights in polished nickel, and LED tape under cabinet downlighting.

To provide the homeowners with an authentic luxury experience, we included a heated tile floor, perfect for those cold Wisconsin winter mornings. Additionally, the shower floor and shower seat are also heated, for a genuinely luxurious morning!

Other details that add to the overall design aesthetic include Alno towel bars, toilet paper holder, and robe hooks all in satin nickel, completing the subtle mixed metal accents in the room.

Finishing The Main Floor Master Suite

We created the master bedroom suite by combining two small, almost unusable bedrooms into a single space perfect for meeting Dan and Jane's needs as they age in place in their home. The ensuite now consists of a bedroom large enough for a king bed, a right-sized, modern, and luxurious bathroom, and a pair of walk-in closets. The spaces are cozy, fit with the design aesthetic within the home, and perfectly meet the needs of the homeowners now and in the future.

I was concerned that they would stay within our budget and complete the project on time. They were great at keeping us up to date on those concerns during the project. The project manager was easy to work with and knowledgeable.
