Our clients’ home is on a large lot located in the Terrace Park neighborhood of Windsor, Wisconsin. As part of an extensive home remodel that included the kitchen and master bathroom, they requested a new floor plan and renovation of their previously finished basement. The lower level of the house previously contained offices with a layout designed for a business. This walkout basement renovation required removing walls to create a floor plan for a family room with a bar, game area, and two bedrooms.

This is a NARI Madison CotY Award winning remodeling project.

A New Family Room With A Pool Table and Wet Bar

Combining the two existing smaller conference rooms into one space allowed us to build an expansive game room and television viewing area. A single doorway initially separated the game room from the large family room, limiting visibility and giving the room a claustrophobic feeling. To reuse an eight-foot-tall double glass door with transom, we sourced & installed a six-inch-tall steel beam to make it fit. The double glass doors and transom window opened up the space and provided greater access. A redesigned bar allowed for added storage with base cabinets and a wine storage area below the peninsula.

Two Accessible Guest Bedrooms

We also converted an expansive, multi-room former home office space into two guest bedrooms, while re-using a see-through double-sided fireplace. These paired bedrooms are ideal for family visits. The new bedrooms have proper lighting and egress thanks to the windows and a walk-out basement door. To avoid work on the exterior of the home, we worked with all the existing door and window locations.

An existing door between the two bedrooms was retained, creating the perfect 2-room guest suite. Each bedroom has a walk-in closet, and all the doors in the space were salvaged and reused to reduce waste and save money. A hallway was added to organize the space and make it easier to navigate. Whereas you once needed to move through the basement by going from one room to another room to another room with no clear passage, it is now organized, open, and inviting!

A Successful Finished Basement Remodel

The lower level is no longer drab and beige, but instead filled with natural light and complimented by a more current color scheme. This finished basement now has a feeling of comfortable sophistication, with a functional layout and timeless finishes that will last for years to come.
