A Remodeled Kitchen For A Home On The National Registry of Historic Places

Our clients Robert and Megan are university professionals with kids, living in a circa 1936 International style home in Madison, WI. They came to us wanting a kitchen remodel and to convert their screened porch into four four-season room addition. At some point in the past, their home had been worked on, but it still featured a 1940s layout that didn’t work for modern living. The homeowner's goal was to create integrated spaces that flowed into each other and updated for a modern lifestyle. They wanted us to create an open floor plan with the kitchen remodel, dining room, and four-season porch connected, open, and filled with natural light.

Opening the Floorplan

The existing kitchen was closed off from the rest of the house with a door that led to a small hallway and a small knee wall opposite the range. The kitchen also had cabinetry surrounding the exterior wall and a large bank of cabinets blocking off the dining room. We removed the walls dividing the kitchen and dining room to open the floor plan. We added new floor-to-ceiling maple cabinets and created a large bank of pantry cabinets. On the opposite side of the kitchen, we added an island that serves as a secondary dining area for the family. The island features double-sided cabinets and a seating area on the end.

Updating The Dining Room

Three custom elements are built into the island: A lighted herb-growing cabinet, an accessible paper towel holder, and spice drawer. At the desk, the printer and paper shredder are hidden in a door designed symmetrically to the file drawers on the opposite side.

A New 4 Season Room Addition

The goal of the four-season room addition was to flood the home with natural light. We added new windows and a sliding patio door to maximize the light flow for the four-season room and kitchen. We were working with the original foundation and concrete slab as the footprint for the new space. We slightly raised and insulated the slab and added a heated floor system for year-round comfort. We wanted to keep the layout and footprint of the room the same as the screened porch to eliminate any foundation or roof costs and eliminate the need for zoning approval. This home is listed on the state and National Registry of Historic Places, so our goal was to provide improvements for the family without impacting the original architecture. The exterior front of the home remained unchanged.

The result of this kitchen remodeling project with an addition is a gorgeous open floor plan with a new kitchen remodel and a four-season room the family loves, that compliments the international style home and achieves all the homeowner’s goals.

We were absolutely pleased with the design team. Co-Construct has been an effective way to communicate with everyone, and your team provided great service delivering product samples to our home. While there were some bumps in the road, PJ and Matt were great team members and we enjoyed your electricians and framers, too.
