Doug and Carol are a retired couple living in DeForest, WI. We built their home for the original owners in 2003. After they bought the home in 2018, they asked us to build a 4-season room addition. Thanks to our previous history, they thought we’d be a great fit, and so now they contacted us to remodel their primary bathroom! Since the couple plans on staying in their home for as long as possible, they wanted their primary bathroom to be a space that fits both their current and future needs. Doug and Carol’s main goals for the bathroom included removing the large, jetted tub and the small separate shower, adding storage, and creating a functional, visually appealing bathroom.

Updating the Original Bathroom

Doug and Carol’s bathroom was original to the home. This meant that the bathroom was dated and no longer functional for the couple’s day-to-day needs. Along the back wall, a large, jetted tub was the primary focal point. The tub was not being used, so they wanted it removed. Our solution was to replace the tub with a large shower area. To function the way they wanted, we installed a new low curb shower pan. Our new shower design features two niches to hold shampoo, a fold-down seat, and a large glass door, which gives the space an open feel and showcases the entire shower. Doug and Carol selected large-format Onyx for the shower surround. Its beautiful blue color sets the tone for the entire bathroom.

Sleek Modern Cabinetry and a Wall-to-Wall Double Vanity

Moving to the vanity wall, a new wall-to-wall double vanity becomes another focal point. To bring warmth to their remodeled bathroom, we incorporated stained alder cabinetry with flat-front doors, which offer a sleek, modern look and an easy-to-clean surface. We kept the vanity in the same position as the original bathroom, but we used the space in the vanity to our advantage. In the center of the vanity are two drawer banks, giving Doug and Carol space to store products. In the center of the vanity, a cabinet sits on top of the Linnstone countertop serving as a striking design feature, and a hidden medicine cabinet that adds both style and functionality.

Adding Smart Storage

In the original bathroom, a small, cramped shower sat behind the vanity. Because we replaced the tub with a large walk-in shower, this feature was no longer necessary. One of Doug & Carol’s original goals was additional storage. We needed a smart solution to house the linens previously kept in the primary walk-in closet. Removing the old shower gave us the space to install a spacious linen cabinet in its place. The new cabinet features lower roll-out drawers and upper doors with adjustable shelving to maximize storage.

The Result of this Remodeled Bathroom

Doug and Carol now have a beautiful, blue remodeled bathroom with modern lines, plenty of storage, and a space that meets their needs as they age in place.
