When we met our clients Bill and Tiaha, they had just purchased their home from Bill's parents, who originally built the house. It was a two-story custom-built country home in a beautiful setting surrounded by lush greenery. However, a closer look revealed many dated elements, including oak kitchen cabinetry, plastic laminate countertops with a drop-in sink, and a ceiling fan right in the middle of the kitchen! In the living room, more 90s oak built-ins, and moving upstairs, even more oak in the kid's bathroom and the master bath. Bill and Tiaha's primary objective was to bring this 1990s home into the 2020s and tie it into its natural setting with a modern farmhouse remodel.

A Contemporary Renovation for the Living Room

The dated oak built-in bookshelves, which matched the kitchen cabinetry, needed to go. We tied the living room into the updated kitchen using color to keep this remodel within their budget. We painted the base of the built-ins with Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog. Next, we stained the wood tops to match the floating shelves in the kitchen. We painted the upper bookshelves in Sherwin Williams Alabaster to create a more modern look and added frosted glass doors.

Updating The Kitchen For Modern Living

The kitchen was considered large and modern when Bill's parents built this home in the 1990s. Thirty years later, it desperately needed an update to the design and floorplan to bring it up today’s standards.

Bill and Tiaha were satisfied with the original location of the appliances. Their main concern was adding storage and improving traffic flow in the space. Our solution? Change the layout by removing the existing peninsula to make room for a large island. This allowed for better flow through the kitchen and added plenty of usable storage. The cabinets are from Sunrise Custom Cabinetry. They have Shaker-style doors, and the perimeter cabinets are painted in the Sherwin-Williams color Alabaster; the island is painted Evergreen Fog.

Creating a Bright Master Bathroom

The existing master bathroom was dark, and the layout felt cramped. It featured dated, dark oak cabinets, a lower vanity height, a single molded marble sink and countertop, a tub/shower, and a linen closet with orange bifold doors. It was in desperate need of an update. To keep with the modern farmhouse home remodel, we replaced the single sink with two half-vessel sinks, keeping a modern look without making the vanity shorter and losing valuable storage space. To improve storage, we added a cabinet on top of the vanity. The homeowners requested a tiled walk-in shower to update the design. We removed the old tub and replaced it with a spacious walk-in shower.

A Successful Modern Farmhouse Home Remodel

Bill and Tiaha are thrilled with their updated home! As a result of our work, they now enjoy spending time in their brand-new kitchen, entertaining guests in the refreshed living room, working from home in the new study, and preparing for the day in their new master bathroom.

This is one of those projects that makes me say, WOW! The frosted glass doors in the bathroom are a great feature, and to me, it’s really the perfectly stacked kitchen backsplash tile and the green island cabinetry that make this job different than all the others. Only the perfect choice of green paint could make the fireplace stone look this good!
