Our clients Kirsten, Jason, and their daughters moved to Madison from Texas in 2022. They purchased their home site unseen. The house was originally built in the 1960s and was renovated in the early 80s. They contacted us to transform this traditional ranch-style home into a mid-century modern beauty that would meet the needs of their family today and serve as their forever home when their girls are grown. Our design touched every element of the home, and one of the key features the family wanted was a finished basement.

A Stylish New Entry for the Finished Basement

Like many traditional ranch-style homes of this period, the entrance to the basement was a doorway in the back of the kitchen. Our design turned this closed-off entry into a stunning focal point. We opened the doorway to the finished basement and in keeping with the mid-century modern vibe, created a new open staircase featuring modern wooden rails and black vertical piping. Our design complimented the new aesthetic, repeating the straight lines found throughout the other areas of the home.

A New Spa-Like Retreat For Family and Guests

Walk down the new staircase, and you see the family's new spa-like guest bathroom. With a large jacuzzi tub and tiled shower, this is the perfect space to pamper guests or escape and relax after a long day. The custom Amish floating vanity with its American Reserve quartz countertop is in keeping with the home's mid-century design aesthetic. The classic white subway tile and dark grout create a stunning contrast, adding a modern visual appeal to our design.

A Multi-Use Play Space for the Girls

Continuing down the hall, you come upon the new playroom for the girls, with plenty of room for all their toys and a great use of space today. As the girls get older, this room will easily in the future, convert into a teen hang-out with friends. We kept the mid-century aesthetic going with the same five-panel doors found throughout the upstairs of the house, and the LVP flooring was carried throughout the basement for a continuous and cohesive look!

The Functionality of This 1960s Home Was Greatly Improved

Our clients expressed their desire for a finished basement as part of their whole-home remodeling, and we delivered. With its new open staircase creating a visual focal point leading to the basement, the design elements we carried throughout the house took the home from dark and outdated to a functional and beautiful mid-century stunner. Our use of repeated design elements throughout the house were all intentionally selected to create this beautifully reimagined mid-century modern, complete with its finished basement that our clients will cherish for years to come!
