A Four-Season Room and Outdoor Living Space in Sun Prairie

A New Four-Season Room and Outdoor Living Space

We recently completed an exciting project for Charles and Kayla at their Sun Prairie, WI, home.

Charles, Kayla, and their young children live in a beautiful home in the Westwynde neighborhood and had a dream of expanding their living space. They approached us with the idea of adding a four-season room to their home. In addition, they wanted to incorporate a spacious concrete patio that included a basketball court, creating a fun and functional outdoor space for their kids to enjoy as they grow older.

See how we transformed their home by adding a four-season room and outdoor living space the entire family can enjoy!

A Vision for The Future

Charles and Kayla came to us with an idea of what they wanted, including a clear design aesthetic. They envisioned a bright, open space filled with natural light, featuring plenty of windows. They were drawn to whitewashed elements but wanted to add a touch of warmth to the design to create an inviting, cozy atmosphere the entire family could enjoy all year.

During our initial visit, we noticed a large deck off the family room that, despite its size, was often overheated due to lack of shade. It had become a cluttered, uncomfortable space filled with patio furniture and toys and required frequent maintenance.

Removing the Deck

The existing deck was the perfect location for the new four-season room. To build the space, we needed to remove the old deck. We used the existing footprint as a template for the new room, shortening it by about six feet to allow for a maintenance-free composite deck. The new deck features a pyramid staircase, connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces and leading to the patio and backyard.

Just off the patio, we added a 20' x 24' basketball court for the kids. This court is a central feature of the outdoor space, giving the kids a perfect spot to invite friends over for a game of hoops. The court is made of simple broom-swept gray concrete, offering a low-maintenance surface ideal for basketball.

Making A Statement with the New Four-Season Room

Charles and Kayla wanted a warm, inviting, and comfortable four-season room the family could enjoy year-round. We created the statement piece of this project. We opened a passage from the room to the deck, installing an Alliance sliding 2-light patio door that brings in loads of natural light and is the perfect transition from indoor to outdoor living. We included tall, double-hung, and transom windows to allow more light to flood the space. The bright, open, and spacious sunroom brings the outdoors in.

To give the space architectural interest and make it feel larger, we designed a cathedral ceiling and included a whitewashed nickel gap. These elements elevate the design and are an aesthetically pleasing way to take this space to the next level of design. LVP flooring throughout the room adds to the coziness and warmth of the space.

One of the most unique features of this four-season room is the exterior trim work. The trim work was designed to match and complement a repeating pattern from the front of the home. To achieve the look we used Smartside panels and custom-cut trim pieces to add a decorative element to the transom window bump out. This detail was a perfect match for the design element from the front of the home making this four-season room a seamless addition to the house.

Charles and Kayla love their new space! We worked closely with the couple, listened to their ideas and vision, and transformed their living space with a seamless four-season room and an extended outdoor patio space/basketball court.
