A Lower Level Living Room Remodel and Kitchen Redesign in Oregon, WI

A Modern Interior Redesign for this Oregon, Wis. Home

We recently completed a project for our clients, Anders and Lauren, a professional millennial couple with a flare for interior design. The homeowners wanted to update and refresh the main living areas of their Oregon, WI home. The project included a kitchen redesign, and a living room remodel with modern interior design elements.

Anders and Lauren had already done some updates. They removed the old, dated carpet replacing it with new LVP flooring. They also made some design choices. These included applying a unique textured wallpaper to their exposure wall and painting their media wall an eclectic navy blue. Even with these updates, the couple still felt that the space lacked contrast and appeal with its simple drywall finished exposure ledge and the white painted walls that washed out any interest in the room. They contacted us to complete their vision.

An Established and Intentional Interior Design Aesthetic

Part of our role is often to educate our clients about their options. We spend a lot of time meeting with the couples we work with to learn about their design aesthetic, needs, and lifestyle so we can help them to make the best choices for their project. In this case, Arlen and Lauren had a flare for interior design. Lauren was focused and intentional about her interior decorations. We didn't want to compete with her decorating vision in any way. Our goal from the beginning was to enhance her design and help her to achieve her goals.

Our designer's solution for refreshing the couple's lower-level living area was simple and beautiful. We created custom woodwork with a wainscot and added a stained wood ledge board to the ledge. This simple design element took the room to the aesthetic level desired by Anders and Lauren. From the easy-on-the-eyes pattern of the wainscot to the contrast between the Sherwin Williams Privileged green, rich brown stained ledge, and crisp white, the lower-level living room remodel was a definite success!

Kitchen Redesign: Refreshing the Kitchen

For the kitchen redesign, the homeowner's goal was to refresh the space to create light and improve flow. This was to be accomplished by focusing on and fixing the little elements and details like cabinet hardware and door and drawer alignment. The details matter and take the design to the next level.

Our goal was to find creative solutions to do as much as possible with the budget available. The solution? Paint the existing cabinets Sherwin Williams Repose Gray, replace the countertops, install new cabinet hardware, install a new tile backsplash, install new plumbing fixtures, and strategically add additional cabinets that match the existing cabinetry.

After painting the maple cabinets a light gray, we replaced the dull, dated, and boring natural stone backsplash. We replaced the old backsplash with a classic Florida Tile Emotive 3x12 subway tile in Astonished White. The French gray grout tied in perfectly with the gray cabinetry and added a subtle contrast. To modernize the look of the cabinets, we replaced the existing hardware with Modern Schwinn matte black bar pulls. Next, we replaced the faucet with a Moen Sleek Matte Black fixture to tie our design together. The dark countertops were replaced with durable Linnstone Mt Blanc White Quartz countertops. These simple changes created the light kitchen and the flow Anders and Lauren wanted.

Adding New Cabinetry

Thanks to managing the budget, we were able to add new cabinetry strategically. We started by making new cabinets that ran to the ceiling to the left and right sides of the sink. Next, we replaced the cabinet holding the microwave with a new cabinet that lifted the microwave away from the range. This cabinet also ran all the way to the ceiling.

The existing kitchen also had a small cabinet retrofitted into a hole in the chimney left when the couple removed an indoor BBQ grill. This was a problem since it was a single cabinet on the entire wall. Our solution was to create a large, decorative storage cabinet. We mounted a new Sunrise Custom Cabinet to the wall to create pantry storage.

The Client’s Loved The Result

Our design and innovative use of simple design elements complemented and completed Anders and Lauren's vision! We refreshed the lower-level family room by creating a simple yet stunning design feature, and we successfully updated the kitchen, creating light and flow using budget-friendly solutions.
