A Complete Main-Floor Home Remodel for This Middleton, WI Home

Courtney and Dan approached us to give their 2004 home a much-needed update. Their goal was clear: create spaces that are functional, beautiful, and durable.

Their home remodel priorities were the kitchen, primary bathroom, mudroom, laundry room, staircase, and 3-season room. The kitchen, the heart of their remodel, needed to feel more inviting.

They wanted the kitchen to reflect its position as the heart of the home. Specifically, they wanted better lighting, a double oven, a step-in pantry, a dedicated coffee bar, and an extended countertop space under a large window. They also wanted to create a cohesive aesthetic throughout the living area.

See how we met their goals, creating a cohesive, beautifully designed living space for this young family.

Updating the Heart of the Home

The existing kitchen featured black granite countertops, dark cherry cabinets and maple floors. Very chic in the early 2000s, but now it was heavy, dark, and dated. Our home remodel started by removing all the original finishes, allowing us to start fresh.

We installed light oak LVP flooring throughout the kitchen and the adjacent areas, which instantly opened the space. Next, we installed custom Amish-built cabinetry in a mix of painted and stained finishes. This brought both lightness and warmth to the room without changing the original footprint. To further brighten the space, we selected Silestone Ethereal Glow countertops for the perimeter and Cambria Hermitage for the island; both countertops offer light backgrounds and warm, subtle veining. This not only brightened the kitchen, but it also added an elegant contrast.

The angled wall near the informal dining area allowed us the space for the dedicated coffee bar the couple wanted. We added a small bar sink and space for coffee pots. To the left is a buffet area that features a butcherblock countertop and ties in perfectly with the wood cabinetry. This functional and stylish element was custom-tailored specifically for the couple

On the opposite side of the kitchen, a wall of cabinetry houses the double wall oven and a hidden step-in pantry. This provides seamless storage while cohesively blending into the surrounding design. Next, we turned our attention to the fireplace next to this cabinetry. Working closely with the homeowners, each brick was hand-selected and whitewashed, creating a soft custom finish that unifies the kitchen with the rest of the home design.

Moving around the kitchen, we come to the range wall. Our design features a distinctive hood that blends both the cabinetry colors. We included an in-wall niche perfect for spices and cooking oils. This feature not only adds functionality to the kitchen, but it also serves as an eye-catching focal point.

Creating a Spa-Like Retreat

The back hallway ends at the primary suite. While we updated the flooring throughout the suite, our focus was on transforming the primary bathroom. The original layout featured a large corner jacuzzi tub flanked by separate vanities, a large linen closet, and frosted glass French doors.

Courtney and Dan wanted a brighter, more functional space with more countertop space, streamlined storage, and a sleek, modern look. We removed the existing fixtures and reimagined the layout. We kept the shower in its original location, but gave it a complete makeover, including new tile, fixtures, and built-in shelving. We replaced the bulky linen closet with a bank of custom cabinetry offering a tailored storage solution.

In place of the oversized tub, we installed a sleek soaking tub with a floor-mounted filler. This opened the corner and created a spa-like focal point. To create a better entry solution, we reduced the size of the entry doorway and installed a single pocket door. The new vanity includes his and hers double sinks with tall storage cabinets on either side, providing ample storage for Courtney and Dan’s personal items. While we kept the bathroom layout largely the same, the new fixtures, finishes, and cabinetry completely transformed the space, giving Courtney and Dan a primary bathroom that is an elegant, highly functional, spa-like retreat.

Updating the Three-Season Room

On the opposite end of the kitchen is the new four-season room. Originally, it was an uninsulated space that was unusable during the cold winter months. Dan and Courtney envisioned a room that complemented the rest of the main floor remodel and could be enjoyed by their family year-round.

We removed the existing flooring and installed new insulation and flooring. Next, we upgraded the windows and added a multi-glide door. For warmth, we installed a gas fireplace. This was a great choice as we kept the original wall covering, allowing the new fireplace to feel perfectly integrated into the space.

A New Mud Room for an Active Family

Next up in our home remodel was the mudroom upgrade. With three busy kids involved in sports, the family needed a space that was both functional and tailored to meet their everyday needs. The original mudroom felt cluttered and lacked storage. Our solution included adding custom lockers, organizational shelving, and cubbies to give each family member their own space.

The cubbies provide space for baskets to organize sports equipment, winter gear, and other items. To meet the need for shoe storage, we included a bench with open space below, perfect for holding multiple pairs of shoes and boots. For cohesion, we carried the same cabinetry color from the kitchen into the mudroom. The result? A beautifully organized, highly functional space that meets the needs of each family member.

Enter the Laundry Room

Continuing through the back hallway, you enter the laundry room. The couple’s primary goal for the space was for us to add organizational shelving, cabinetry, and storage for multiple laundry baskets to improve functionality.

Originally, the room had only one upper cabinet above the machines and another above the laundry sink. A countertop wrapped around and connected to the sink. The layout made the room feel small and cramped. To maximize storage, we installed taller upper cabinetry spanning the full length of the wall.

Next to the washer and dryer, we included an open cabinet with two pull-out trays. This provided practical storage while keeping one side of the room feeling more open. On the opposite wall, we added a wall-mounted sink and faucet that perfectly match the overall style of the home.

With the extra space on the right side of the laundry room, Courtney incorporated a movable shelf that is perfect for laundry basket storage. This added flexibility to the layout. Combined with the new cabinetry and fixtures, this detail enhanced both the functionality and aesthetics of the room.

The Result

Our main-floor home remodel met all the homeowners' goals. We created a more functional, bright, and inviting kitchen, a new four-season room the entire family could enjoy, improved the functionality of the mudroom and laundry, and provided a spa-like escape after a long day. Dan and Courtney now have beautifully remodeled spaces that meet their goals, provide a cohesive home design, and will continue to serve their family for many years to come!
