Our clients Adam and Britney, are doctors returning to Madison after completing their residency on the west coast purchased a fabulous 1980s contemporary in the Arboretum neighborhood in Madison. They contacted us based on a referral from their realtor, wanting a complete renovation on their new home to bring it up to 21st-century living standards. The project included bathroom remodeling projects on each of the home's two-and-a-half bathrooms.

They desired to create the feel of a modern mountain industrial home, something along the lines of a Utah mountain home, but not a cabin. Each bathroom was designed to complement the overall interior design style, colors, textures, and functionality. Our clients requested that, when possible, we incorporate natural materials and bring outdoor materials indoors like stone, wood, and metal.

Reimagining the Powder Room

Adam and Britney wanted an interior design that flowed easily throughout the house. Our goal for the powder room was to tie the design into the color palette of the main living space. We borrowed design elements from other areas, including the cabinetry from Northern Classics with modern slab doors.

We stained the floating vanity with the Driftwood color to match the upper cabinets in the kitchen. To further tie the powder room design into the main living space, the countertop on the floating vanity is the same Walnut Butcher Block with Edge-Grain in a natural finish we used in the kitchen.

The sink is a simple vessel sink that the homeowners provided. A Mitzi pendant light fixture completes the design.

Bathroom Remodeling to Create an Inviting Guest Bath

Our clients wanted an inviting oasis for their guests that was comfortable, functional, and aesthetically beautiful. Like the rest of the home, the guest bathroom was functional, but today's style standards seriously dated it. We kept the design clean and minimalist to meet our client's goal.

We replaced the tub surround with 3x6-inch glazed ceramic tile by Color Wheel Classic in a warm matte suede grey for the guest bathroom remodeling. The tub surround complimented the 12x24, half-offset patterned tile flooring by Elemental Canvas in dark gray. To further incorporate the rich dark tones of the interior design into the space, we chose a soapstone countertop for the Nautical stained Northern Classics vanity and Kohler under-mount sink.

The Brizo sink provided the bathroom bling, and tub fixtures and the Brizo pulls. They add a subtle elegance to the overall guest bathroom design!

Reconfiguring the Master Suite to Accommodate a Spa-Like Oasis

To create a relaxing retreat, we completely reimagined and updated the master suite to reflect Adam and Britney's unique taste and style. We started by incorporating the seldom-used solarium directly into the master bedroom space. It became a direct extension of the master suite bringing in a ton of natural light, opening the room to the calming arboretum views, and adding coziness and comfort that were not previously present.

We completely remodeled the master suite to provide the homeowners with improved closet space and straighter walls to make furniture placement easier. As part of the master suite redesign, our bathroom remodeling completely reimagined the master bathroom floorplan. We removed a leaky old jetted tub and replaced it with a luxurious Schluter Kerdi Shower system with a 12x24-inch Imagica Haze tile surround and a custom frameless glass shower door. The gold-colored handle and fixtures add an elegant luxury to the space.

We installed his and her floating vanities from Northern Classics in natural cherry. We separated the vanities with a drawer bank and medicine cabinet that provides plenty of storage space. The drawer bank is stained dark to blend in with the color palette and elements found throughout the home. To complete the vibe, we added a Silestone Calacatta Gold Countertop.

The look of the master bath is completed with a rich 12x24-inch offset porcelain tile floor from Elemental Canvas in dark gray. It offers a stunning contrast with the tile shower surround. For the lighting, we chose Kuzco wall sconces. Accessories include an Anzzi Finish Matte Black towel warmer and black vanity mirrors by Uttermost Crofton.

An Above the Garage Master Suite Addition Remodeling Project

We recently completed an addition for our clients, John and Amy, a professional couple with young children living in the Blooming Meadows neighborhood in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

Their home featured three bedrooms on the second floor. The existing master bedroom was outdated and impractical for modern living, and with three young children, two needed to share one of the two remaining bedrooms, and all three kids shared the second-floor bathroom. Another problem the family needed addressed was that John needed a private home office, and the one they currently had was a shared space that did not work well for his job.

A New Private Bathroom for the Adults!

One of the major elements on John and Amy's wish list was a private bathroom space just for them. They wanted plenty of space to get ready in the morning, away from the kids, and we delivered! The bathroom features a handcrafted Amish custom double vanity with a tower cabinet in alder wood, stained Carbon Gray. The contrasting Linnstone Quartz Calcutta pattern countertop brightens the space and ties in visually with the elegant tile work in the spacious walk-in shower. We added custom alder wood framed mirrors stained in the same Carbon Gray as the cabinets to complete the vanity. Over each of the mirrors, we installed Quoizel 2 light vanity fixtures to provide plenty of warm light.

In the shower, the 21st Century Tile 12x24 floor-to-ceiling tiles in Tivoli Silver give the room a bright and modern feel, and the low entry shower makes entering the shower safe and easy for the couple. We included a helpful niche in the shower for shampoo and other toiletries and, for contrast, used a beautiful hexagon mosaic accent tile. The glass doors give the space an open feel, making it bright and inviting. The Arbor Hills luxury vinyl plank flooring in timber adds a warm feel, giving the room a natural look with the benefit of waterproof LVP.

The Result

The final result of this second-floor master suite addition is a home that fits John, Amy, and the kid's needs and lifestyle perfectly. John now has the perfect private office space. Since John and Amy now have their private master suite, and each of the kids has their own bedroom giving them their own space to grow as they grow, their home is more comfortable and functional. And on the exterior, you can't even tell there's been an addition!
