Our clients came to us as a referral from the company that initially did the build-out of their high-rise condominium. They love the condo, but several things were not to their liking and were improperly positioned. The fireplace was in an unusual position near the dining table. It was not well utilized or fully visible within the unit. The television was centered on the available wall space, but its location did not provide a comfortable viewing position with the furniture layout. Moving the TV to the ideal viewing location from the furniture placed it off-center in the space. A creative design solution was required to solve this problem.

Problem Solving Through Design

Though the electronics for the TV were well hidden in the pantry, it took away valuable storage space. Our clients preferred that the new cabinetry and shelving accommodate the electronics and cables that support the TV and audio system. They also researched and discovered an electric fireplace that they liked. Not having to install a gas line to supply the fireplace made the job easier. Because the size and compliance constraints of an electric fireplace are considerably different from a natural gas unit, we were free to create a unique design that met their needs.

Mid-Century Modern Design

Finally, having remodeled several homes in prior cities, our clients came to us with a design aesthetic in mind. Building on their ideas and preferences, we presented a design called for a visually compelling wall with a contemporary Mid-Century Modern look. To accomplish this, we incorporated elements such as tile, wood, and stone that have colors and textures that provide visual interest. This media center and fireplace were not to be any ordinary entertainment wall.

An Additional Art Wall

But the entertainment wall is not the only area of design in the condo. Across the way where the fireplace used to go, now there is space for an art wall. But it's not just any art wall; it's is a plane that extends just beyond the hallway wall to provide visual interest as you walk in the main entrance of the condo. The wall is another piece of sculpture in and of itself. It is a plane to hold the artwork. The same wallpaper is used on a niche within the area, and shared light windows were added above the art wall bringing natural light into the home office.

The result is a condo that is a contemporary take on Mid-Century Modern aesthetics. It ties in with their furnishings, decorations, artwork, and their lifestyle. There is symmetry where it is needed, balance in every case, and asymmetrical visual interest. We achieved the goal to provide texture using tile, wood, and wallpaper! The condo is no longer a standard build-out within Weston Place; it is now a one-of-a-kind home.

We appreciate the fact that even though our project is small, we have been treated like it’s a big project. We’ve never felt like we’ve taken a back seat to other, larger projects. We also SO appreciate that Abe and Dave listened to us and came up with a design that really hit the mark. Everyone has been so easy to work with.

We love the remodel whatever the season, but it is especially perfect at Christmas!
