About This Kitchen and Laundry Room Remodeling Project

Our clients, Ed and Melanie, are empty nesters who love their 1990s home in Westwynde. They wanted a bright, open kitchen, a laundry room remodeling, and a solution to bring more light to the living room where Melanie would often play her grand piano. The living room featured tall ceilings and large transom windows but was still dark and uninviting. To bring their love of nature into the space, they painted both the kitchen and living room walls the same green color. Still, because of the way the light bounced, they looked like different greens that seemed to clash.

We Started with the Kitchen Remodel

The existing kitchen was large but not well designed, and lacked sufficient storage, and was far from the open, bright space our clients wanted. Our design team felt the space was perfect for a double island. One for food prep and the other as an informal dining area. At the left end was an underused 90s-era kitchen desk. This was the perfect place for a large pantry cabinet. We moved the refrigerator to the space as well. This freed up the space across from the desk, allowing us to open the wall between the kitchen and living room. This invited light to flood into the kitchen from the living room. Moving the fridge also allowed more working room for the formerly cramped range, which gained three feet of additional countertop working room!

Creating an Art Wall

Melanie is a world traveler and avid photographer. An important design element requested by the clients included a space to hang some of her favorite landscape shots. Just around the corner from the kitchen was a narrow wall, the ideal location for an art wall. We designed a custom-arched niche to match the new opening from the kitchen, providing the perfect space for treasured artwork..

The Laundry Room Remodeling

Next, we turned our attention to the laundry room remodeling. Just down the hall from the kitchen was the couple's laundry room. It seemed cluttered and featured an inconvenient use of space, impacting its functionality. We reoriented the space, creating new cubbies that fit the laundry baskets perfectly! Next, we installed a new mudroom bench with hooks above that is the perfect place to hang coats, hats, keys, and the dog's leash.

The Result Of This Kitchen and Laundry Room Remodel

Ed and Melanie now have an open, airy kitchen flooded with light, a new, more functional laundry room, and a bright living room perfect for showcasing Melanie's photography. Their home now perfectly complements our clients and their desired aesthetic!
