Scott and Julie are long-time residents of the Conservancy Place neighborhood. They had their first family home built soon after the neighborhood was created. Having moved into an empty-nest ranch home, a former Parade Home, built by a well-known Madison area builder. The house was 13 years old, and the couple felt it was time to update it. They were ready to undertake a modern farmhouse home remodel of the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and screen porch.

A New Modern Kitchen

The original kitchen was serviceable and included luxury features, including a cooktop with a wall oven, a microwave, and a large island. However, due to fundamental design flaws, it felt small, cramped, and in need of an upgrade. We started by rethinking the overall space and its place in the home. The existing stairwell was T-shaped and centrally located, making the kitchen feel confined and like it was an afterthought. After presenting the couple with several design options, Scott and Julie chose the one that best met their needs. We opened the stairway to create a single entry from the living room. This allowed us to create the ideal layout. Next, we adjusted the original layout by moving the refrigerator and wall oven, spreading out the kitchen, and allowing it to breathe! Updating the Laundry Room

The existing laundry room was simple, with a single sink, a cabinet, and the washer and dryer. The homeowners didn’t need the sink, so we removed it and gave them a wall of built-in Maple storage cabinets painted in dried thyme, a beautiful Maple butcher block countertop, and a tile backsplash. For the ultimate in organization, we added accessories, including laundry-hamper pull-outs from the base cabinets, an ironing board drawer, and a hanging clothing rod.

A Luxurious Master Bath

Like the kitchen, the master bathroom was serviceable and featured some luxurious features, like a full-tile shower with a touchpad control; however, once again, fundamental design flaws made it feel small and cramped. The original bathroom was split into a water closet with the shower and toilet, and a vanity room. The vanity room was small and had three doors opening into it. Like the kitchen, we did a complete redesign. We took the master bathroom down to a blank floor plan. We removed the dividing wall, which allowed us to lengthen the vanity and place a linen cabinet at the end. Once we removed the dividing wall, the room got much longer. To temper the feeling of length, the walk-in shower was divided from the rest of the bathroom with a wall. View Additional Images of this Bathroom Renovation.
