We recently completed a project for our clients, Scott and Julie. Long-time residents of the Conservancy Place neighborhood in DeForest, Wisconsin, they had their first family home built soon after the neighborhood was created. They moved to an empty-nest ranch home, a former Parade Home built by a well-known Madison-area builder. Although the home was only 13 years old, they were ready to personalize it by remodeling the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and screen porch.

A Needed Kitchen Renovation

The existing kitchen was serviceable. It had luxury features like a cooktop with a built-in wall oven and microwave, and a large island. However, there were some basic design flaws that made it feel small, cramped, and in need of an update. Our first task was to rethink the space and redefine its location in the home. A centrally located T-shaped stairway made the kitchen feel confined. Combined with an odd layout where the cooktop and sink were side-by-side, and the wall oven was across from the cooktop and sink, this layout forced users to constantly cross between areas with no defined cooking or storage spaces. Choosing the Best Design Option

We presented Scott and Julie with several design options, and they chose the plan that best suited them. To start, we removed the kitchen side of the awkward stairway to create a single entrance from the living room. This completely transformed the kitchen, allowing us to create an ideal layout. We started by putting plenty of space between the sink and cooktop. Next, we relocated the refrigerator and wall oven to maximize the working area. This spread out the kitchen, allowing it to breathe!

Function and Aesthetics

Our new layout gave the couple’s kitchen much more functionality. Cabinet inserts offer the ultimate in organized storage. The Cambria quartz countertops are durable, easy to clean, and beautiful. Our design also met the homeowner’s desire for a modern farmhouse aesthetic. From the alder-wood, white-ash-stained custom cabinets to the large custom-built maple wood island, painted a warm thyme green with its custom curved countertop, our design reflected a warm modern farmhouse vibe. The Kohler farmhouse sink completes the look and adds to the aesthetic. View The Bathroom Renovation For This Project

A Beautiful New Kitchen

The result? Scott and Julie now have a highly functional kitchen that meets their desire for a modern farmhouse aesthetic. With its open layout and defined work areas, ample storage, and custom finishing touches, it’s a kitchen renovation the couple can enjoy for many years to come.
