John and Pat are empty nesters living in Brooklyn, Wisconsin. They are nearing retirement age and came to us looking for a kitchen remodel and a bathroom refresh. Their dated 1970s bathroom, located on the main level and used the most, was not appropriate for staying in their home as they age. Their goal was to convert the tub/shower unit into a low-threshold walk-in shower to make it more friendly for aging in place.

Planning an Affordable Bathroom Renovation

The only bathroom on the main level was around the corner from the new kitchen pantry. The bath was a typical 1970s bathroom that featured a tub/shower combo, a standard-height vanity, and laminate flooring. To keep this bathroom refresh affordable, we took a “pull and replace” approach, keeping the plumbing in its original location and updating the fixtures.

Creating a User-Friendly Walk-in Shower

After removing the existing tub/shower combo, our first task was to replace the old fixture with an Onyx Shower system. The custom frosted glass shower door created a user-friendly shower perfect for aging-in-place. John and Pat chose a light luxury vinyl tile for the flooring, keeping the room light and stylish.

New Bath and Light Fixtures Provide a Fresh Look

While we kept the plumbing in its original place, we replaced the fixtures for a refreshed look. Our choice of a 36” tall Amish-built custom vanity with a light quartz countertop finishes off the bathroom update. Along with the new walk-in shower, it creates a clean, refreshing look that will keep John and Pat in their home safely as they age. It meets our client’s needs and stays within budget!

With their remodeled main-level aging-in-place bathroom, John and Pat have a stunning, open, and updated home they can enjoy safely and comfortably as they head into retirement.

Working with the Degnan team was terrific from start to finish. Not only did our kitchen, music room, and bath turn out beautifully, but every member of their team was friendly, knowledgable, kind, and efficient. Great experience. Thank you, Brian, Morgan, David, Dave, Kelly, Amy, Abe, and team.
