Our clients, John and Pat, are empty nesters nearing retirement. They came to us looking for a kitchen remodel and a bathroom update for their 1970s transitional home in Brooklyn, Wisconsin. Their existing kitchen was small and closed off and had not been updated since the home was built in the late 1970s. They knew exactly what they wanted: more storage, upgraded appliances, easily cleanable surfaces, and comfort.

Opening the Kitchen Up To The Living Space

Their kitchen, with laminate countertops, oak cabinets, and sheet vinyl flooring, badly needed an update. To give John and Pat the open kitchen design they were looking for, we started by removing the wall that divided the kitchen and living area. The original kitchen had a soffit above the upper cabinets, which we removed. This gave us the room we needed to install the handcrafted Amish ceiling-height upper cabinets crafted in Wisconsin.

More Storage and Updated Countertops in an Open Kitchen Design

One of John and Pat’s goals was to improve the storage available in their new open kitchen design. We obliged by giving them a new pantry cabinet and replacing the existing base cabinets with handcrafted Amish cabinetry featuring functional storage solutions. Within the cabinets we created space for new appliances that help bring this updated kitchen to life! The light gray Linnstone Mistyville quartz countertops, shaker-style cabinets, and light gray paint give the space the clean, modern, light, and open feeling John and Pat were seeking.

A Stunning Visual Element

After removing the wall dividing the kitchen and living space, we had the space to include an island with seating. One of the couple’s original goals was to incorporate a locally sourced natural wood element into our kitchen design. The island features a locally sourced, cherry wood, live edge wood slab mounted at table height. It’s a unique, eye-catching feature.

With new Amish custom cabinetry, a pantry cabinet, and base cabinets that feature functional storage solutions, space for the latest appliances, and a beautiful live-edge table-height cherry wood slab counter, John and Pat’s new functional and stylish open kitchen design meets all their needs now and in the future!

Working with the Degnan team was terrific from start to finish. Not only did our kitchen, music room, and bath turn out beautifully, but every member of their team was friendly, knowledgable, kind, and efficient. Great experience. Thank you, Brian, Morgan, David, Dave, Kelly, Amy, Abe, and team.
