Our clients, Culley and Marianne, are working parents living in the Madison Vilas neighborhood. They came to us for a home remodel, wanting to expand their home by creating an addition above the existing garage, which would create a flexible, multi-purpose space for their family to enjoy. They also wanted us to update and open up the kitchen space, improving its functionality to better meet their everyday needs, while creating an open-concept living area.

A New Open Concept Kitchen for Modern Living

The existing kitchen felt closed off from the living and dining areas. It had an awkward island, multiple doors on nearly every wall, and a cramped cooking zone. The layout lacked flow and didn’t reflect the homeowners' design style. To create a better connection to the living spaces, we removed the wall dividing the kitchen and dining room. This opened the floor plan, added storage, and improved functionality and flow throughout the area. Custom, Amish-built cabinets, Linnstone countertops, and a fresh palette of high-end finishes now enhance the space, meeting Culley and Marianne’s goals for both looks and function.

First-floor Mudroom Addition

Moving through the kitchen, we come to the new mudroom. The home had a front entry and a small entry off the garage, but without a dedicated space for jackets, backpacks, or shoes. Outside, a narrow gap between the house and garage created an awkward corridor. Our home remodel solved this by adding a mudroom off the back of the garage. Extending the addition to the width of the garage transformed this wasted space into a functional mudroom. The new area features cubbies, a bench, and enclosed storage for off-season clothing.

Building On the Addition

Upstairs, there was an existing rooftop deck over the garage with access from the second-floor landing – the perfect spot for an expansion. By restructuring the garage walls below and incorporating the new first-floor mudroom, we created a seamless new addition to give the family a flexible, multi-purpose space. With vaulted ceilings, light oak flooring, maple beams, tons of windows, and a large glass door, the new space is open, bright, and inviting!

The Result of this Home Remodel

With their updated, functional, and beautiful kitchen, an open-concept living space, a seamless addition including a new mudroom, and a bright second-floor multi-purpose room, Cully and Marianne’s home remodel has given them a perfect balance of style and functionality.

We absolutely love the way everything is turning out (interior and exterior) and we get lots of compliments, especially regarding how seamlessly the addition transitions into the existing roofline!
