A Multipurpose Above-The-Garage Home Addition in Madison

Our clients, Culley and Marianne, are working parents living in Madison’s Vista Neighborhood. They contacted us for a home remodel that included updating the kitchen and expanding their livable space with a home addition over the garage. They wanted to create a flexible multi-use space that the entire family could enjoy.

Building On the Addition

Upstairs, there was an existing rooftop deck over the garage with access from the second-floor landing – the perfect spot for an expansion. By restructuring the garage walls below and incorporating the new first-floor mudroom, we created a seamless new addition to give the family a flexible, multi-purpose space. With vaulted ceilings, light oak flooring, maple beams, tons of windows, and a large glass door, the new space is open, bright, and inviting!

Creating a Larger Footprint for the Home Addition

Outside, a narrow gap existed between the house and the garage, creating an awkward and unused corridor. To maximize the available square footage, we extended the back of the garage. This not only created a larger footprint for the addition over the garage, but also gave us the space to create a much-needed mudroom for the family.

A New Stylish Multi-Purpose Space

A major goal was adding a second-story space. A rooftop deck over the garage, accessed from the second-floor landing, was the ideal spot for this. By restructuring the garage walls, we created a seamless addition that matches the home’s exterior. The new, flexible room features vaulted ceilings, light oak flooring, maple beams, many windows, and a large glass door, making it bright, open, and inviting—perfectly fulfilling Culley and Marianne’s vision for a functional family space.
