A Home Remodel with an Open Concept Kitchen and Above Garage Addition

Before and After Images of the Kitchen and Home Addition for This Madison, WI Home Remodel

We recently completed a home remodel that included a new open concept living area, updated kitchen, new mudroom, and a multi-functional addition for this Madison family.

Our clients, Culley and Marianne, are working parents who live in the Vilas neighborhood in Madison, WI. They came to us seeking a home remodel that included improving the functionality of the kitchen and opening the kitchen up to the rest of the living area.

They also wanted a new dedicated mudroom and a multi-purpose room addition over the garage. Our solution to extend the garage to accommodate the addition and open the kitchen to the rest of the living space met their goals by adding functionality, flow, and meeting their aesthetic needs.

Creating A Functional Open Floor Plan

One of the homeowner’s primary goals was to create a more open floor plan and a more functional kitchen. The home’s existing kitchen felt closed off, cramped, and dated. It featured an awkward island, had multiple doors on nearly every wall, and a barely functional cooking zone. The layout completely lacked flow and did not reflect Culley and Marianne’s design style.

Our first task in this home remodel was to open the wall between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. This created a better connection and flow, giving the couple the open floor plan they were looking for. Our solution not only opened up the floor plan but also added storage opportunities and greatly improved functionality. On the opposite wall, we removed a window to create a new opening that seamlessly leads into the new mudroom addition.

Our kitchen design features a large, spacious island with seating for the family. It’s the perfect space for morning coffee, afterschool snacks, and entertaining family and friends. We installed all new Amish-built custom alder cabinetry with Linnstone Eiger Mist countertops. We completed our kitchen design with a fresh palette of high-end finishes. Our new kitchen design delivers functionality, practicality, and beauty, meeting the couple’s goal while giving their home a renewed sense of openness, warmth, and flow.

A Landing Zone for the Entire Family

Moving through the kitchen, we come to the new mudroom. Originally, the home had a front entrance and a small entryway off the garage, which was hampered by the basement staircase. Outside was a narrow gap between the house and the garage, which created an awkward and unused corridor.

Culley and Marianne asked if we could create a dedicated space to store jackets, backpacks, and shoes. After careful consideration and planning, we decided to add a mudroom off the back of the garage. This allowed the garage to function as a pass-through rather than a catch-all space.

To add available square footage, we extended the back of the house, giving us the space we needed. By extending the addition to match the width of the garage, we were able to transform the wasted space into a highly functional mudroom. The new space features cubbies, a bench, and enclosed storage for off-season clothing, providing a practical, functional, and stylish solution that the entire family could enjoy.

A Second Floor Multi-Purpose Room

Another goal for this home remodel was to create a multi-purpose space that the entire family could enjoy. Over the garage was an existing rooftop deck, which was accessible from the second-floor landing. This was the perfect spot for the family’s new space.

By extending the downstairs addition to match the width of the garage and restructuring the garage walls below, we were able to increase the square footage of the existing deck. This allowed us to create a seamless new addition and a perfect multi-purpose space.

The new room features vaulted ceilings, light oak flooring, maple beams, plenty of windows, and a large glass door. The new space feels bright, open, airy, and inviting. It perfectly meets the family’s goal for additional living space and captures Cully and Marianne’s vision for a functional, flexible, multi-purpose space.

The Result of This Home Remodel

Our home remodel perfectly addresses Cully and Marianne’s vision for a more open, functional space. Their home now features an open-concept first-floor living space including a thoughtfully redesigned and more functional kitchen, a new mudroom entrance and landing zone, and a seamless addition that enhances the family’s everyday living. This successful home remodel is a perfect balance of style and functionality that the entire family will enjoy for many years to come!
