Home Renovation Cost Versus Value in Greater Madison

Home Renovation Cost Versus Value in Greater Madison, WI

As a design-build firm, we're often asked about the value their project adds to their homes. The fact is that there are two areas of value that you need to consider when making the decision to invest in improving your home.

First is your improvement's value to you and your family's lifestyle. Every home improvement project should first add value to your daily life. Whether it's added functionality in the kitchen or a spa-like relaxing retreat for rejuvenating after a long day, your project should enhance your life. This is a very subjective area of value.

On a more practical level, every home renovation cost, provides a return on investment should you ever decide to sell. The amount of recoupment value is different in different regions of the country.

Home Renovation: Kitchen

Along with bathrooms, kitchens are the most popular home renovation projects. It's often the first chance to personalize their home and kitchen projects range from simple updates, to major renovations costing over $100,000. Replace the cooktop/oven range and slide-in refrigerator with new energy-efficient models. Replace the laminate countertops; installing a mid-priced sink and faucet. Add new resilient flooring. Include an energy-efficient range, vented range hood, built-in microwave, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and custom lighting. Add new resilient flooring. Finish with painted trim and ceiling.

Real life: Options such as extending the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, removing soffits, creating extra drywall work, and major electrical or lighting upgrades are some of the options that impact this price range.

Upscale Major Kitchen Remodel

Also, installing a high-end under-mount sink with designer faucets and a water filtration system. Add new general and task lighting, including low-voltage under cabinet lighting. Install tile or similar flooring that looks like wood.

Real life: Many kitchen remodeling projects are more than just the kitchen. Flooring often extends into other rooms. Clients often remodel their dining area laundry or mudroom at the same time as the kitchen. They might even update the entire main level of the home. It’s a great efficiency to do these extras at the same time as remodeling the kitchen, and of course they increase the price of the work.
